Cover art

Cover art changes just as what type of fantasy manuscripts publishers buy. Re-issues are a given; if it isn't done, a publisher may fall behind with what the current buying fans want as far as cover art goes.

I think if they were going to switch to just one character, go for something with widebase appeal but some tiny shred of originality, and try to tie the image to the story, they should use a Deck of Dragons motif. The RG cover? King of Chains.

That Deck of Dragons idea is a good one, each book cover being the face of a card.

That actually would be an awesome idea. If done right would look incredible. I would definately rebuy the entire series if they went for those covers as they would look incredible on the shelf.

If they re-release the whole series with one set of covers I might rebuy the whole thing anyway... Just cos it would look really cool on a shelf.

I never realized asthetics were so important for a book shelf.
I have most of my books lying around in a pleasing disarray.

I like the look of the new cover, it really isn't too bad. You can see Rhulad covered in coins and even his sword looks mottled. The detail is good. I'm just skeptical as to the fire behind his throne.

I agree, and I think the main thing in there which gives a big hint as to Rhulad in the Book is that he's all alone. I think we will end up sympathising with Rhulad in the end...

This cover is so dark that one can barely make out the silhouette of the person there and yet all claim at 100% that it's Rhulad (i mean a guy with a sword and long hair.. it could be anyone. I agree Rhulad's the most probable choice but I would never guess it at first place and I dont understand why everyone doesnt bother doubting it at all).... and now he's also covered in gold?? His sword is mottled?? Good level of detail?? I keep getting amazed and progressively worried about my eyesight...

The link Jen'Isand Rul posted on page 7 of the forum is a picture of the cover art in large scale, same as the one found on Amazon. In it, you can make out the the coins because all over the body are little circles. The clearest place to see those are on the top part of the thigh where the light reflects off them. As for the sword, the blade looks like shards of it have fallen off. Thats just what I see though so I could be wrong. We'll see when the final draft is drawn, no?

Hi guys,
Here is Transworld's response pertaining to the new covers:
«The plan is to rejacket the entire Erikson backlist with the new pared down/simplified look – nothing to see yet, but a couple – DEADHOUSE GATES and HOUSE OF CHAINS for example - are likely to be based on existing covers. Steve Stone remains the illustrator for the new covers.»
To make you guys feel better, I will have 5 copies of REAPER'S GALE up for grabs on the blog!

Ok, change the covers...not all of the old ones are that good, to be honest (MoI comes to mind). But why change the layout?! That is a wrong decision in my book. And simplified look?!! ...Bah!
But thanks for the heads up, Pat.

Personally i don't care, The cover is superficial to me, and i usually remove the dust jacket on hardcover books untill they go into storage anyway. Living in America, i have 3 different kinds of books as it is. My GotM is hardcover(purchased of E-Bay), my DG, HoC, and MT are normal Paperbacks, and my MoI and BH are the Giant Paperback versions. All in all i won't even notice if RG is different at this point.

That is a really good cover, in my opinion.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Brys Beddict pointed out this line from Fiddler describing the Deck of Dragons in the Fiddler's Game thread in the TBH forum:
Looks like to me that the artist read some of the book/s after all.
Quote
'There's the House of Chains, and the King of that House, the King in Chains - is sitting on a throne. The scene is very dark, swallowed in shadows, except I'd swear that poor bastard is screaming. And the look in his eyes.....,,'
Looks like to me that the artist read some of the book/s after all.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Credit goes to Hetan for that quote. I was simply reinforcing her argument by pointing out the connection to the cover art for this book.

Making each cover a different card from the Deck would be awesome.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.
