Whats with the big clunky logo type stupid helmet on a bar?
That looks pretty bad... One assumes it's Apsalar because Kalam is way bigger than that. Just goes to show an artist doesn't have to have a clue about what's in a book to draw a cover.
Lets hope Steve Stone does a better job on Reaper's Gale... which reminds me, I must send a bump email to Bantam for the cover.

I'd bet that Reaper's Gale will have the same new cover style as The Bonehunters paperback. I'd be surprised if it didn't. If Stone's still doing the cover that's great, but I'm hoping they suddenly didn't decide to do this remarketing a month or two ago and that's why Gale has been delayed by a month (because they're redoing the cover). That would be lame.

"Try standing out in a winter storm all night and see how tough you are. Start with that. Then go into a bar and pick a fight and see how tough you are. And then go home and break crockery over your head. Start with those three and you'll be good to go."

As posted by Hetan from an E-mail from the publisher
"Meanwhile, we're reworking/refreshing Steve E's covers - making them less fussy, focusing on a single/iconic image (still using the brilliant Steve Stone) and, I hope, giving them a more contemporary/ mainstream feel."
This new cover fits the description perfectly. "single/iconic" - hence that one character who is supposed to be apsalar and then the mainstream feel which it clearly is.
And its not a stock photo (was it abyss that said this)

That is the Bantam Night of Knives cover. Notice similar font, those fancy curvy things on the sides of that stupid helmet on the BH cover are also present in this novel on the sides of the title.
So yeah...the newer novels are bound to have this stupidness on them.

ah, that cover of NoK is better than the one I have. Mine looks like it might have been made with a photocopier or something.

Actually, my point was that it looked like they took a generic bit of fantasy art someone had for sale (as i understand, many cover artists have a portfolio that publishers can just flip thru and buy something for cheaper than a commissioned piece), stuck the new logo junk on it, and voila! instant smoky ninja assassin cover for TB.
As for the NoK cover, what do we have there... a ship. In rough seas. That could be a leftover from a Master & Commander novel, or an unused cover of Feist's Prince of the Blood, or... see my point? The less the cover has to do with the story, the more likely it came out of a portfolio. Unlike the US Midnight Tides cover, which clearly, by way of three grey dudes and a dragon skull, was specific to the story.
- Abyss, won't judge a book by its cover, but will judge a publisher.

Okay, that's made me slightly more hopeful that the new covers won't be completely terrible. However, I agree with what seems to be the consensus: They've taken some corny but individual fantasy covers and replaced them with generic corny fantasy covers. The Bonehunters one reminds me of Trudi Canavan's books; there's a sense of a similar approach by the designer.

more mainstream feel... you mean, selling out?! What the hell does the Celtic knot on the NoK cover have to do with the novel... the thing I like abou tthe Malazan books is that they're not tired re-enactments of the same old ancient/Medieval European settings. You'd think the Druids were had gotten a hold of a medieval galley and were off somewhere.

I really liked the first 4 covers i had.... Large scenes... My midnight tides was a bit more boring, but still looked similar to the others. Oh well... guess i like what is in the books now over when i bought them. Not sure i would pick up a new book that had the assassin cover at the start of this thread.

Really Glass? Please give details. I am a lone supporter of Todd Lockwood on these threads. His MOI cover wasn't great, but I loved the cover to HoC and MT. Honestly, with the terrible job the UK publishers are doing with The Bonehunters, I am hoping Todd Lockwood will get some due praise.

The people here are never happy. It's always "the cover art is stupid/trite/cheesy fantasy rubbish". Uhhh...last time I checked, MBotF is fantasy...? And if it's not that it's "Bah, they messed up the Edur" "There's no white crow in that scene" "The dragon skull's all wrong!" *whines* Pah!
Settle on something for once people! [/rant]

Yes it's fantasy, but it's not stupid/trite/cheesy fantasy rubbish. And I like Lockwood's HOC and MT covers, you aren't the only one.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I'd been reading through Bonehunters recently and something kind of clicked inside me: have the cover be a close-up of the Bonehunters patch, as sewn by Sort or somebody else, on someone's shoulder.
I know it doesn't scream "Read Me!", but it would probably be a very satisfying one for the devoted fan or repeat reader (which is where a good chunk of the money comes from).

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves Todd's work. He is an amazing artist and Steve is lucky to have him now on the US covers. In all honesty, I hope Todd is allowed to go back and redo the first two books to bring them in line with the rest of the series.
I was in the room when Todd and Steve were discussing what the cover to the US Bonehunters would be. In fact, Steve sat in one of my chairs next to my window and read the excerpt to both Todd and I in hopes Todd would paint it for the cover. Todd listened and then asked Steve a multitude of questions that Steve, on the hot plate, had to answer. So I know the scene and how it will look. And Todd has painted it.
I'm sure Tor will post it soon.

Midnight Tides isn't meant to be a literal cover scene. It's a montage, as many fantasy covers are, of different elements portrayed in the book. If the fans can't see that, then they are blind.
I believe people love to bitch just to bitch. I admire both Steve Stone and Todd Lockwood. But people have to understand most of their problems flow from the publisher's art department and the direction therein.

You realise that almost everyone here (me included) will be exceedingly jealous of your inside information? Oh, and hints for the TBH cover!
