I was thinking about this last night and l wondered what people thought the possibility of Dassem appearing in Reapers gale. I had a scroll through the Reapers gale section and couldn't find a title concerning this topic, apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere.
We know near the end of the bonehunters that Dassem had left drift avalii when Icarium was brought to the island to regain the throne of shadow and the edur were duped, and Icarium felt the presence of Dassem. My question is, where did he go?
With the speculation that hood himself might play a significant role in the up-coming book and with Dassem harbouring a vow of vengeance against him, could this lead us to a confrontation between Dassem and hood on Lether.
The Emperor seems to be a magnet drawing all these powerful warriors to him (Karsa and Icarium). Could Dassem be another of these people being drawn to Lether.
It seems everyone else is rowing in that direction, why not Dassem.
Or is it too early in the series for him to cross paths with that hoary old goat, Hood.
But thinking about it as l write this, Dassem seems to be more of ICE's character perhaps rather than Erikson's and might not show up till the last book. What do you think?:p

Dassem and Hood are on a must see collision course, no doubt. But like you say, I think it'll happen a bit later. Unless Reaper's Gale is describing the wind rushing though Hood's cobwebs as he pegs it from Traveller.

I just don't know.

So, you are convinced that Traveller is in fact Dassem Ultor?

I'm not disputing that, it's just quite confident of you to assume the two are one and the same.

There's one disputed piece of info that has people miffed, traveler and Dassem seem to have different eye colors.

Now that is close attention to detail! Maybe SE made a mistake?
Anyway, David Bowie has different eye colours, and he's the same person ... I think.

Aye, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are two different people. I mean it is perfectly feasible that ascendancy could change his eye colour.
The arguments for them being the same are much more convincing than those against...

Anyways, back on topic, I think that Dassem could be in the book, especially as all the other powerful characters seem to be converging. It makes me happy to think what will happen when they all come together... :p

I agree the eye colour is an inconsistency, but with six books in the series written and one by Ice little details are bound to get mixed up. Who knows they proably did it on purpose to throw people off, yet there are too many other things that fit. We know Dassem is Dal honese, as is traveller, that is wriiten in HOC.
And to take a quote from that page, ( 'You claim this fight in the name of the malazan empire?' the captain asked. 'More than you know,' Traveller replied.)
With the history he, shadowthrone and the rope share from Apsalar's memories, he must be someone from the family. Greymane's dead and Ameron vanished, l don't know how good a swordsman he was but we know Dassem was supposed to be one of the best.
And with traveller choosing the name vengeance when he takes the sword on drift avalii and with Dassem vowing vengeance against hood, for myself nails it. Otherwise it would be a prick-tease of a literary manner.:p

The eye-colour thing could be one of two things imo....

first.... ICE didn't realise his eyes were black

second ... SE didn't tell Ice his eyes were blue :D

seriously guys... two different editors... two authors... bound to be inconsistencies in such a mammoth series... I can live with it, but Traveller is Dassem Ultor/Dessembrae and there's much more of that story to come. :p

Again, the eye-changing thing doesn't truly hold any weight, imnsho.

I wish I could do that...

Don't forget that little pow-wow Hood and Ganoes Paran had!

It might have been a "get free card in case Dassem finally catches up with me and I (Hood) want the Master of the Deck on my side".

That agreement may also have been to make Hood unbeatable in case enemies of Hood came calling!

Or it could have been something totally different!

:Erm:

I never thought about Hood's conversation with Paran in that context. It does mesh, however.

Dassem's role to play in what is to come fascinates me. I cannot wait to see him again.

I don't think either Quick or Paran would have been that surprised at Hood wanting a shaved knuckle in the hole should Dassem catch up to him, so I don't think it's that.

"The Lord of Tragedy. Dessembrae. That is Dassem Ultor... for there to be a cult, a religion, with priests and such, there must be a god. A living god." (p. 105 tBh)

This quote came from Leoman, I might be wrong, bit Dessembrae was the head of the first empire, Dessimbelackis (sp?). Would that make Dassem Ultor the head of the First Empire? It kind of fits with the theme we've seen of great characters being demoted through time... Whiskeyjack was demoted down to Seargent, if I'm right then Dassem Ultor went from being head of an empire (willingly or not) to being the first sword...

Where this ties into Reaper's Gale... It is obvious that the Letherii have to be descendante of the First Empire, the closest descendants (except maybe whats going on in Assail). The Letherii use magic from the Holds, not warrens. So if Dassem Ultor is Dessembrae, you would think that once things really start getting hairy, he's going to have to stick his nose in. Leoman even says to Corabb "where doesn't matter. You should ask: who is he? Ask that, Corabb Bhilan Thenu'alas, and I will give you answer". It seems that from that statement alone, Dassem Ultor's part is definitely not done in these books, the question is, in which book will he show his face and be called by his name (not Traveller, ha ha).

If my connections are wrong I apologize, I've had a couple of glasses of wine. Just thought those couple of quote were definitely relevant to this discussion.

Cheers,
Mythodikal
