Yes and was the rubicon point for me abandoning floppies. I read floppies for the first half and trades for the second, and enjoyed the second way way more.

The sole exception is Elis' GLOBAL FREQUENCY because each floppy was self-contained and different and brilliant.

I read the first half of the first trade of Saga in the shop recently - I'm saving the rest for when I can buy it, but it was already brilliant and just about everything I've heard suggests that if it keeps the quality up, it's gonna be one of those era-defining comics like Sandman or Transmet.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

After reading the first 6 issues in trade I immediately emailed my comic shop and said "I don't care if you have to order more issues special, put this on my pull list now!" LOL So now I'm luckily only missing one issue in floppy, and I'm on point as they come out.

The only other big hit I'm missing issues of is THE SIXTH GUN which NBC has now chased down to shoot a pilot for a TV series...and if it's anything like THE WALKING DEAD, the floppies (which are already rare) are going to go through the roof.

Picked up a Marvel NOW! book that doesn't suck ass! THE FEARLESS DEFENDERS (which is a team up book with Misty Knight and Valkyrie), written by THE SIXTH GUN's Cullen Bunn. It was a pretty solid opening issue.

DC hires anti-LGB-marriage author Orson Scott Card to write Superman story.

In a complete non-surprise, people object.

DC isn't even being subtle here... this is a total attention grab. FFS he's not even writing the comic, it's a 'digital release'... (pun intended)...

All you have to do is mention Card's name somewhere (anywhere!) on the internet and people will throw a hissy fit.

Yep.

Now if they also got China Mieville to write a Superman story... and then the fans got to vote on which was better... and then the two authors had a slap fight.... THAT would be news.

Miéville's DIAL H is not doing well. And I'm not sure I'd like to see him tackle a Supes story.

I maintain my Card-boycott...won't ever read his stuff. So this isn't really news to me, just a digital release I won't get.

It's funny how so many people feel the need to spout off angrily about DC's choice of him..when they really can just...you know...NOT read it.

I won't read OSC, but I don't go on and on about it. I just avoid his work. Easy peasy.

God forbid people get angry at bigots!

Also here is a subtle metaphor that can easily cover this situation:

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I'm all for anti-bigotism.

I just think DC is very deliberately exploiting the sentiment.

Lovecraft was (arguably) a product of his time.
What's Card's excuse?

Lovecraft took massive steps to overcome his racism over his life and even married a Jewish woman against a societal background of built-in racism, while Card thinks homosexual people are subhuman filth and genuinely wants gay people to suffer. Why are you defending him? He certainly doesn't need your help, he's by far vocal enough to yell abuse at those he offends himself. Oh, sorry, "Hurr people keep giving this person who believes I don't count as a person and don't deserve the same rights as him or anyone he considers human an outlet for his disgusting views, why should I be mad at this?"

And if you bring up free speech or censorship, then freedom of speech =/= freedom from consequence of that speech, I will not be tolerant of his intolerance and voting with wallets is an extremely efficient way of indicating dislike of a product. So, suck it, an author you like is a shit and people would rather he not be paid to hate and do harm.

I still think they should have given him Swamp Thing.

...or Constantine or Dr Fate or the Spectre or even frikkin Zatanna... i mean geez, they have the guy who practically invented the 'new weird' in fantasy lit and they give him a retread of a 1980s experiment in fan-polling? seriously?

Oh man! Yeah, SWAMP THING would have been RIGHT up his alley. I can't believe I didn't think of that one. Either that or ANIMAL MAN....either are totally in his wheelhouse!

I don't know about Constantine...but yeah ST and or AM would have been ideal.

I'm tempted to believe that no one at DC had read his books.

I suppose it's only fair to DC to acknowledge that if the story is to be believed, Mieville went to them, more than once, and ASKED for DIAL H. They needed a few sacrificial lambs to make up the New 52 so hey, why not give the guy a shot...

That said, i think that they should have given him something else and said 'rock this and THEN you do DIAL H'. The Phantom Stranger, Kid Eternity....give him fucking Doctor Occult.... i don't care...

So what exactly is the problem with Mieville's run on Dial H? I've not read a new comic book in years, so I'm a near total outsider beyond being familiar with Mieville's work.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

It's kind of trying to fit his New Weird style into a VERY generic plot and setting. So while it's a bit strange, it doesn't ever creep out of its origin as, use a phone box (these exist even in the DC New...even if they don't really exist IRL any more) to dial H-E-R-O and become one for a short time....Mieville's take on it has some people turning into some really bizarre hero's. But it's never not about that...so regardless of what other aspect of the story he's trying to tell, it's just rather blase.

...and the big bad is the 'evil force of chaos' thingy from GENE RODDENBERRY'S ANDROMEDA called 'The Abyss' in the show and 'Abyss' in the comic.
(no relation)
(to either).

But 'Dial H' is an utterly dated concept and Mieville's attempt to update it doesn't shine thru. Should have called it 'Download H for Hero'... wait that sounds like an internet-based heroin delivery service...
