I was accidentally in San Diego during the Comic Con. Still didn't want to go to it.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Yes but you hate fun.

And laughing at nerds.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Hokay, so after my weekend at FAN EXPO 2012, I was able to do and see lot's of stuff.

In the back issues bins I got to fill out Conner, Palmiotti and Gray's POWER GIRL run (everything but issue 1 & 2 which I am still missing), as well as their JSA Classified run, and BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE all of which I got the wonderful Amanda Conner to sign (she is one of my very fave artists, and getting to meet her was an absolute TREAT!) and Jimmy was there too (her hubby) and he signed my POWER GIRL stuff. I also bought a great SUPERGIRL print from Conner which will be framed soonish.

I got my WE3, BATMAN & ROBIN and ALL-STAR SUPERMAN signed by my other favourite artist, the amazing Scotsman Mr. Frank Quitely, and he was so gracious and awesome. We also got to sit in on a sketch duel between him and J. Scott Campbell where they each drew Harley Quinn, Batman and then Venom. I would have given my left arm to win Quitely's Harley or Batman sketch. But we got to listen to him tell stories and talk about the industry and his inspirations (amongst whom he lists Katsuhiro Otomo, and Mobius). A great hour!

We sat in on another sketch duel between Jim Cheung and Mike Choi...(they each sketched Deadpool and then Catwoman) and I shit you not it was like a Laurel and Hardy routine....with Jim being quiet and short-answered in a really funny way, and Mike being more loquacious and hilarious. It was a hell of an hour, and the MC of the event played off both artists personalities.

I could not get anywhere near Francis Manapul on Saturday (it was CHAOS at the DC booth all day) to get him to sign my FLASH issues, but he's from Toronto so I'll get my chance.

I DID however find out that one of Frank Quitely's first real jobs in comics was doing the HONDO CITY stories for 2000AD (this is basically the Japanese version of Mega-City One in which there are Judges, but they are based a little more after samurai) and I grabbed a trade of it which just came out....and it is phenomenal...pure, unadulterated Quitely. Just stunning art, and a great story by Robbie Morrison.

All in all a great weekend. I didn't fill out my back issue collections as much as I'd liked to have, but I came out alright.

...and last night I taped down the majority of my collection and reorganized it..whilst taking note of holes in the collection...and realized that my SUPERGIRL collection is missing like 37 issues (Pre-DC Nu)...Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu that is going to hit my wallet hard over the next few months as try to fill it out.

IN THE NEWS...

So the latest news, is that both George Perez (SUPERMAN DCNu) and Judd Winnick (CATWOMAN and BATWING in the DCNu) have rather quietly left DC to pursue their respective careers elsewhere....though it sounds like Winnick's departure is nothing more than just a time constraint thing to do his own creator-owned stuff.

And then there was this weekend and Rob Liefeld's spectacular show of asshatery....in which he walks off all three of his current titles, insults all of the DC brass, had a very public fight with BATMAN and SWAMP THING author (my fave writer in the DCNu) Scott Snyder in which Rob told Scott that people aren't reading BATMAN because of Snyder's writing but rather just because it's BATMAN (which is untrue, I read it because I love Snyder's work), and he also apparently had a vicious, name-calling go at Marvel's Tom Brevoort when Brevoort stepped up and defended one of the DC editor's attacked in Liefeld's line of fire on his twitter rampage....proving once again that Rob Liefeld...aside from not being able to draw fucking ANYTHING properly....is one of the biggest douchebags in comics today.

Well done Rob. Destroying your career at DC comics and then totally burning bridges with Marvel. Bravo.

Anyways, this show of Old Guard leaving DC sounds like it has to do with DC's master DCNu plan that is to keep continuity VERY tight and straight and that requires a LOT more input from the editor's than previously, and it might be that older artists and writers are not used to being more constrained in the stories they get to tell. I for one am glad they are trying to keep continuity straight...it's an important part of the universe to me...sure I can understand writer's wanting to tell their stories how they want to and not have to be beholden to where the other 52 titles re going....but a bigger part of me wants to see just what kind of masterpiece these young bucks can come up with when they have to be cohesive with each other.

Oh and another thing...though I swore up and down I would not read any of the BEFORE WATCHMEN stuff...since I'm such a big Amanda Conner fan I grabbed the 1st 2 issues of BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE....and you know what? It's fucking good. You could knock me over with a feather, Darwyn Cook (who is on writing duties for the title) is doing a VERY good job. And of course Amanda's art is stellar.

Youngblood was just optioned for tv or film.

While everyone and their action figures knows that can end up going precisely nowhere, he's probably feeling rather full of himself.

Ugh. Youngblood was awful.

A Film based on it would be worse than a Terry Goodkind book.

Yeah, I went there.

Actually it might have been Bloodstrike... i forget.

Either way, there is a kernel of neat idea at the root of both properties.Youngblood is goverment sponsored super-heroes doing what the gov tells them to do. The first issue way back when had them taking out Saddam Hussein - hey, why not? Bloodstrike went one darker, with the gov ressurrecting dead superheroes as re-useable super-zombies to work as their black ops hit team. First issue had a hysterical scene where a guy's gaping chest wounds are fixed with staples because the budget couldn't afford better.

Leifeld is not wholly without ideas. Don't forget he CREATED Cable and Deadpool.

It's just his stunning lack of talent as writer or artist that ruins things. That and thinking he's god's gift to comics who keeps, for no good or logical reason, being given opportunities other more talented people would sacrifice limbs for.

So basically, he's Mark Millar, but even worse.

io9 has concept art from a JLA/Transformers comic that never happened.

LINKY

Look closely at the seven panels behind the Trinity.... i can't decide if this would have been awesome or awful, but Jimenez sure as fuck brought his A game to the idea table...

Details spoiled because you deserve to have your first look like i did...

Well, I guess it was inevitable:

Marvel NOW!
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Seems like a gut reaction to the moderate success of the DC New 52.

Had they truly wanted to do this then they should have used the ULTIMATE line years back when it started and used it as a defacto relaunch and not just an alt-universe line.

This seems a little trite.

Though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested in it enough to check it out.

THOR: GOD OF THUNDER sounds intriguing, as does ALL NEW X-MEN. The rest...I dunno. Captain America in Dimension Z? WTF?

I'd be interested in seeing if the new X-MEN can in any way touch the stellar Ultimate run from Kubert way back when. I still hold that as the BEST storyline for those characters.

iirc George Perez didn't leave DC all that quietly. He had a bit of a moan about how they treated him. Greg Rucka has done the same actually, but he had a go at Marvel too
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell
