I'm fairly sure the X-Men family of titles completely fell apart with Inferno; that really did it for me, anyway. I didn't buy another X-book until Morrison started writing New X-Men. I don't think I even bought another spandex title until the late 90s; and when I did I think it was Ellis' The Authority...

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Oh, and make a point of tracking down the X-MEN/FANTASTIC FOUR and (the less cool but not bad) X-MEN/AVENGERS limited series from around then. Good stuff, if only to see the Thang skullpunch Wolverine unconscious. Wolvie was weaker than.

- Abyss, ...even tho' the answer remains 'Wolverine'...

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Off-topic, but apparently Warren Ellis is working on a treatment for a King Arthur film which'll be produced by the folk who did 300 (so reasonably major). It'll be interesting to see how that works out and how he'll manage to make the same old story not boring...

You did miss Spiderman beating the living fuck out of the Kingpin in the middle of a prison for having his aunt shot, though. That was the only good scene to come out of that whole mess.

There was a point in time when Spidey was neat, if only for the caliber of his villains - Venom was a totally cool concept 20 years ago or so. Now, like the X-Men, he's just recycled ideas trying to recapture the glory.

Somewhere there is a panel from the first issue of Marvel's 'WHAT THE?' parody book with the caption

"Wolverine: he's the best there is at what he does, and what he does, is dress up in women's underwear."

I can't find it, but trust me, it's legendary.

And THAT is why the answer is always "Wolverine".

I suspect that every time Ellis does a scriptment it gets mutilated in production. GI JOE: RESOLUTE was one of the few times that didn't happen. The real world just can't handle Ellis' mind.

- Abyss, read Crooked Little Vein and concluded that the real world are idiots.

As something of an Arthurian freak myself; I can't ever see those stories getting boring. Badly told, yes; boring, never.

I dunno, Arthur as a transgender cyborg with godzilla bukkake tendencies might get dull.

- Abyss, ...to say nothing about Lancelot as a thirteen yr old emo skateboarder vampire with a dildo helmet, i mean, hasn't that been done to death by now...?

That was the costume he took off that alien warrior when the X-men and the Shiar Royal Guard consisting of similarly super powered beings were battling it out. One of the Alien super beings burned him so he took that costume off an unconcious beast guy. I always suspected that this costume was the inspiration for sabretooths.

I finished Ultimatum a little while ago, because I hate myself.

Loeb is the worst writer in the world.

Oh God! Ultimatum... I gave up after the 1st issue. That was when I saw it couldn't end well. Mainly because it started so appallingly.

You have no idea. For instance, Magneto has more control over Cyclops' eyelids than he does an ordinary metal sword.

The only two words I can find for it are DEEP HURTING

That sound you hear is the 'Ultimates' line rushing headlong to join the 'New Universe', 'Marvel 2099' and 'Marvel UK' in the depths of nerd purgatory, emerging only for sporadic Peter David storylines in unrelated series to be cancelled within six months or less...

- Abyss, has seen the Loeb'otomy before and it's never pretty...

Actually, I highly recommend downloading Ultimatum, as it can be pretty awesome in its suck. "This is wrong. Things will change."

Finally read the last two trades of Morrison's New X-Men; good stuff. Not sure why his Magneto annoys people, but oh well.

This should explain a fair bit about the mentalities of British comic fans and writers who are, let's say, of a certain age... Although, to be fair, most of the British Boys' Adventure Comics of the 70s were equally, if not more, mental.

And yes, I grew up on 2000AD. There's a meme on a comics discussion board I frequent about "Comics that have Thrill Power!" The phrase was invented in 2000AD and perfectly describes the best of its output. A comic that has Thrill Power should just grab you and not let go. It can be clever, but it doesn't have to be. It can be violent, but it doesn't have to be. It can be well written, but it doesn't have to be. It can be beautifully drawn, but it doesn't have to be. Thrill Power is something you know when you see it. It's a little bit zen like that...

For instance; Grant Morrison's JLA is pretty much entirely constructed from Thrill Power and Warren Ellis' Global Frequency would bleed Thrill Power if you cut it.

So, as an aside to the main thrust of the discussion, which comics do you think have Thrill Power?

Hellboy's stuff, The Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (might I add that the thrill power has just kept on building), Lobster Johnson (because the guy just oozes pulp tough guy.

X-force vol 3 - There's just something rather delicious about these normally kiddy friendly superhero's being set lose in a very dark story arc.

Preacher - I don't know what it was about this series, but I just couldn't stop reading. I think it was the dialogue and the very human characters.

Ah Preacher.... i did like Preacher. I wanted to love it but
Spoiler

The story also shifted over time, from 'demanding an explanation from God', which was cool and elegant, to 'saving our asses and oh, maybe making God pay', which was dumbed down and simplistic.

That said, there were some amazingly cool story elements

Anyhoo, it's still worth the read, if only for the sodomy and the John Wayne guest appearances.
