Hmm, comics.

I haven't had the money to buy much recently, although I did take advantage of Waterstone's 3 for 2 on all GNs to buy Arkham Asylum (disappointed, frankly), All-Star Batman and Robin (going into it not expecting a good story, I found an enjoyable daft comedy), and Mouse Gard (slight, but the art is stunning).

I've also been reading Powers via the library, which I've been really enjoying, and I read the first two Ex Machina volumes, which I was really impressed with.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I've got a whole load of early Powers floppies knocking around somewhere in my house. I have given up on the series now; the earlier ones are great - even after, dare I say it, the infamous "monkey sex" issue - but after they joined up with Marvel the whole affair went downhill a bit. I suspect I just got tired of Bendis' schtick.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. The funniest thing about the monkey sex was the script fragment included in the trade. With phrases like 'close-up tight on her monkey buttocks' and such.

That's as far as I read though, the trade with that in. So if it gets worse later I wouldn't know.
I think I missed one along the way too, not found it at any library near me. Can't remember which though.

One of the things the floppies of Powers do have going for them is one of the funniest lettercolumns I've ever read. After the whole "monkey sex" weirdness you should have seen the shit people were giving Bendis.

But I really couldn't justify buying them on those grounds alone.

The Sandman is awesome, isn't it? Finish out the series and get Dream Hunters and Endless Nights.

Then buy the first three trades of 100 Bullets. Better than Preacher or Transmetropolitan.

You can go back to your topiaries after that - diminishing returns.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I find it interesting that americans are so much into dc and marvel. Being from europe i've mostly read french/belgian/dutch comics while growing up. I started out reading Asterix, lucky luke, yakari and one that is called Spirou et Fantasio originally, from about the time i could read. Having public libraries with all the different comics is a great plus ;)
Later i started reading blueberry, the convoy, the metabarons (anything by Joderovsky is psycedellic), Franka and just about anything published by Arboris (especially stuff written by Froideval).
I tried reading some batman/x-men comics that they also had at one point, but found it to be either too hard to get into the storyline (x-men) or lack of story (batman). I did find sandman at the library and quite enjoyed it. So the question is, what should i look for that is kinda like it?

And if i can add webcomics i must say i enjoy Least i could do and lackadaisy.

Specifically to Sandman, Lucifer is a spinoff with said personage from Sandman - while it's a bit different in tone it's nonetheless a good read.

More generally, regarding English-language comics of a more European trend, I'd recommend avoiding the two main imprints and looking to%

The Best ongoing superhero comic going right now is Green Lantern. That shit is like Star Wars. Blows my mind each issue. And, this is coming from a Marvel Fan.

Graphic Novels and Trades I love:

DC: New Frontier - Darwyn Cooke
Criminal - Ed Brubacker
Ultimates 1 & 2 - Mark Millar
Black Hole - Charles Burns
Scott Pilgrim books - Brian Lee O'Malley
The Alcoholic - Jonathan Ames
Walking Dead - Robert Kirkman
Preacher - Garth Ennis
Watchmen - Alan Moore
Blankets - Craig Thompson
Y The Last Man - Brian K Vaughn
Ex Machina - Brian K Vaughn
Maus - Art Speigelman
Ghost World - Daniel Clowes
Batman Killing Joke - Alan Moore
Dark Knight Returns - Frank Miller

The List goes on and on and on.

on my wish list is 100 Bullets, and Scalped.

Floppys I read

Captain America
Daredevil
Thor
New Avengers
Might Avengers (this is hanging on by a thread)
Uncanny X-Men (also, this has not been so hot and is close to getting cut)
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps

Anything Mark Millar writes
Anything Steve McNiven draws

I've picked up and am going to try Dark Avengers

I've cut back a lot lately due to $$$ being tight.

Dude, Secret Invasion is a tour de force compared to Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum. At least the space stuff is all good, the War of Kings in particular looking awesome.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Oh, don't even get me started on Ultimates 3! Really... I could go on for a very long time. And it's probably not good for my blood pressure.

Also, after Jeph Loeb completely fucked up the ending of Ultimate Power why on earth did anyone think it was a good idea to let him continue writing...well, anything?

Ultimates 3 is shit. I dropped all my ultimate titles because of it. I wouldnt read anything he wrote again if it was given to me.

As far as Secret Invasion goes its aces compared to Final Crisis. What a shitty mess that is. Dan Didio sucks at putting together a big event (Green Lantern Books excluded, but their awsomeness lies with Geoff Johns).

Well, Ultimates 3 really didn't have any major effect on the other series, I think mainly because everyone tried to ignore it, but you could probably just stick with Ultimate Spiderman if you wanted - actually you'll have no choice, everything BUT Ult. Spiderman is being cancelled after Ultimatum. Good news is that SOMEONE ELSE is writing Ultimate Avengers, which will be the only other Ultimate Universe title left.

As for Loeb, the nerdy people I geek out about comics with believe that after his son died, no-one's been able to say no to his really, really shit ideas.

I'm really liking Final Crisis, as it happens. At least it's trying to be about something; the nature of story etc. Morrrison would appear to be actually trying to say something here; which is practically unheard of in a big crossover event.

The main problem with it seems to be one of scheduling - Superman Beyond 3D#2 really should have been out before FC#6, and both Revelations and especially Legion of 3 Worlds should have finished ages ago.

Didio forced Morrison to rewrite FC's ending after they'd started sending out the first issues, so all the tie-ins needed to be redone too.

Well I hope Morrison doesn't get too pissed off with DC about it because I'm going to be horribly disappointed if Seaguy 2 doesn't appear...

Almost as disappointed as I was about Marvel Boy 2

Bloody Countdown to Final Crisis being completely ignored and classified as not canon certainly didn't help people know what was going on. Oh, and after all the work that went into Darkseid being made into a threatening villain again? He's not even the big bad guy! They have an evil Monitor (not the Anti-Monitor, he's in the only good event DC's got, Blackest Night) who's a space vampire and has an evil Superman from another world as an underling.

Also the spoilerfilled events leading up to
Spoiler
were supremely stupid. I'd hate to be just starting mainstream comics around now, you are going to be confused as all hell.
