Same Sex Marriage

There’s been a case in Ireland where a lesbian Couple who have been together for 25 years and married for 3 years in Canada, have just lost their case to have their marriage recognised as legal. Supposedly the Irish constitution only recognises marriage as that between a man and a woman! Personally I think it the right of every couple, gay or straight to be married.
What does everybody else think of this?

I don't think the church should be forced to recognise gay marriage but the state most definately should. There is no reason for it not to. If the law doesn't recognise anything other than marriage between a man and a woman then the law needs changing.

Same-sex marriage should be legal and afforded the same recognition as marriage between a man and a woman.

I agree with you all. It's no one's business telling other people who they can and cannot love. They should be afforded the same rights and privileges that straight couples have.

People always say it's against the institution of marraige, thesepeople are normally from are religious background, normaly (from my expereince anyway) Christian.
Marraige has existed a lot longer than Christianity it appears in many cultures and faiths before it came about. So who are they to tell us what it say's in their bible. Why should that have any effect upon an institutional notion that they did not invent.
god n Politics don't mix, and even non-religious politicians tend to hate this issue as it attracts pressure from the moral (white christian) right. At least from my point of view that's how it seems.

Tiste, I understand you don't agree with gay marriage for religious reasons, which is fair enough but noone is suggesting that the church accept and carry out such marriages, only that the state recognise them and allow married gay couples the same legal rights as married straight couples.
Is it your belief that the church should have an influence on the laws of our country? If not then I don't see why you should have a problem with gay marriage being legal.
If you do think it should be illegal and that our laws should be based on religious rules/views/morals then I would really like to hear why? How do you justify that? That would mean forcing all of us to follow the rules of a religion we don't believe in.

Yeh I have to say I’m getting pretty sick and tired of these Homo-Phobic self righteous kiddie-fiddlers telling two consenting adults what they can and cannot do! I guarantee at least 70% of them are gay themselves, just like that evangelist freak in America who got caught diddleing a male escort!
If I hear one more person say “God created Adam & Eve not Adam & Steve I swear I’m gonna pencil them in for a swift visit from the angel of death!

Is the Irish constitution officially based on Christian morals? If not, then this shouldn't even be an issue. I can't think of a single justifiable reason for a secular state to not recognise same-sex marriages.

Two adults: its all good.
So long as you dont try and marry an animal or child. Yes I know both of these happen.

"Here is my final point. About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography and smoking and everything else. What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I fuck, what I take into my body – as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet?"

I'm cool with it.
I freely admit that the sight of two dudes kissing or more just creeps me right out. But my revulsion certainly shouldn't prevent folks from equal rights.

I'm all for it. Don't see any reason why a civil union shouldn't be allowed.

It is the same as people who have been living and sleeping together for ages - what is the point of getting married? To me marriage is a sacred binding of two people before God. It is why I am saving myself til after marriage, as I believe that marriage is something special.

To be honest our society is founded (loosely) on Christian morals anyway. They are just slipping away from it. I do believe in equality etc. in that people should be allowed to practice whatever beliefs they want to. However the Christian faith (and others) do have some good ethical values that a lot of people follow even without being Christians.

Though it seems to be that, as with pretty much any issue, the press only reports those things. Other people don't get a mention, so people will believe that all Christians are like that evangelist who got caught with a male prostitute.
It happens to everyone, and it is a shame.
