An assassin possesses a fisher girl. Then a mage battle occurs wherein one of the mages gets cut in half and then has his consciousness transferred to a puppet. This happens in the first freakin' chapter of the book. Anyone who can read that and then yawn and put the book down clearly has no soul, and needs to be slapped upside the head with many Malazan-sized books until they come to their senses.
What is it about this book that's hard to get into?
