PANDA BEAR - Good Girl / Carrots
What a weird song! 12mins 42 seconds of weirdness in fact. Sounds like someone doing a chillout remix of the Aphex Twin covering a Beach Boys song. Or something like that. And yet it seems to work. In a weird kind of way.

Weird!

What I don't get, is you mock rap, then post saying you are listening to Opeth. Who happen to suck so much dick they got into the blow job hall of fame without staring in a porno.

Who are perhaps one of the most talented groups of musicians in the world today? Yeah, that's the one. :) How about I send you some? :p They don't rely on computers to play their music. Their music is more than a repetitive beat with someone swearing over the top. They don't conform to any convention, and always bring something different and new in their albums. What has rap done except make middle class white kids wish they were lower class black kids?

I wouldn't go and paint all rap as "a repetitive beat with someone swearing over the top". I'm something of a fan of rap, but i find the modern crop of super commercial image conscious rappers to be really tedious. You ask what has rap done, well it originally started out as a new form of party music, and evolved to reflect some of the social concerns of it's fans, who were mostly inner city people.
Like any other form of music it has evolved and you now have a myriad of styles within the "Rap" genre. Some stuff is superb, some is utter rubbish. Most is somewhere in the middle.

No different to rock, metal, country or pop. Or jazz or classical for that matter. Some get perceived as sell outs, other get the critical acclaim. I myself can't stand the gangsta rap style so prevalent today, though occasionally they do produce a cracking tune or two.

I'm not familiar with OPETH's music, but i did see that their new album got a really high score on Metacritic so I'll see if I can track them down and have a listen. But my opinion of a lot of heavy metal is that it sounds like stupid repetitive thrashing of instruments with someone shouting over the top. Sound vaguely similar to a description you gave earlier. But I know i've heard some great tunes by metal bands and hard rock bands in the past, so i know not to actually tar the whole genre with the same brush. It's just often difficult to find the ones you might like, if you only get exposed to the crap in the mainstream.

Now, I'm off to listen to
BLACK MOUNTAIN - Tyrants

I'll get back to you when i've found some opeth and tell you what i think.

its old and not very well...made/produced etc since i lost the editing files in the great computer crash of december 2005 (hence why its a "rough sketch!" hurrrr)

that said i think theres some catchy stuff here even if i have a random odd sense of music

i might even get back into music production one day, if i can be assed :)

@Binder of Demons - heh, fair enough. I know that a lot of people don't like metal, and I'm cool with that. I just like people to know that there is a lot more progressive style to metal. But then I am a complete metal snob, so I like all the weird ones. You may hate Opeth, but they aren't a typical metal band. There's a lot of crossover genre work going on in there... The reason I have been listening to them loads is because to truly appreciate their work, one needs to give the album, as a whole, a good few listens. As they are my favourite band, I listen to it more than most. :p

NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL - Holland 1945
production quality isn't the best, but it's a fine song.

REST - Our friends know nothing about density
A cool tune by an Irish instrumental rock band.

TOOL - Lateralus
Love that song. Especially the wonky time signatures.

Still haven't had a chance to get to hear Opeth, but i'll see if they have it in my local cd store tomorrow or sunday.

If you like Tool, you might like Opeth. :) Both bands are unconventional and cross-genre progressive music. Opeth have more death metal than Tool of course. :p

I was listening to some British Sea Power the other day, and they're nowhere near as good as I remembered. Really quite uninspiring, to be honest...
