Scott Weiland died. I doubt STP was anybody's favorite band, but they did go from a 2nd tier grunge band to a pretty decent alt-rock band for a while there, and his singing voice was quite good when not doing the Vedder thing. Pretty sad testament to the grip of addiction, which he seemed to have a Sisyphusian struggle with.

RIP Scott Weiland. Great vocalist with a lot of talent, it would have been interesting to see Velvet Revolver keep growing as a band had addiction not derailed everything. Sad news

Gutted with that news, I loved Velvet Revolver and I was partial to a fair bit of STP. Such a sad waste.

It was a surreal moment when I realized Scott Weiland died less than a 15-minute drive from me.

Music-wise, my new favorite thing is Wizard Magic. If you like chiptunes, electroncia, or nerdpop you'll probably love this guy. The link is to his Bandcamp page where you can stream for free and/or pay-what-you-want for the album. The album's also free on Google Play.
"White Knight" is the song that hooked me, but at the moment I'm in love with the first four tracks, plus "Cryptochromes" and "Klozzit Skeletons".

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I can't get this song out of my head.

Going to see Joe Bonamassa do an acoustic set tonight.
“The others followed, and found themselves in a small, stuffy basement, which would have been damp, smelly, close, and dark, were it not, in fact, well-lit, which prevented it from being dark.”

Spotify brought me to a band called Altima. Hadn't heard of them before but oh my lordy me this is a proper 2Unlimited throwback and accordingly I love it.

That is definitely an alley that is nowhere even near my musical neighborhood. But the wandering around town improvising in an elaborate costume thing is pretty cute.
Lately I been listening to Dilly Dally (straight outta Toronto!), who sound like the Pixies by way of Hole/Nirvana and fuzzy slacker indie rock in general. Hate to generalize but frankly at the moment if you don't have the Pixies in your DNA somewhere I don't really got time for your band.
This album woulda definitely gone on my top 2015 list if I knew about it last year. All killer no filler.

I figured you would like them. The guitarist is Arjen Anthony Lucassen AKA Ayreon. If you don't know Ayreon he does high concept albums with large casts of singers and musicians kind of like rock operas. He had collaborated with the singer, Anneke before on a few Ayreon projects. Worth checking out if you don't know their stuff...

I really like this, but it just seems to lack an edge.... slightly sharper vocals, or maybe a bit more metal.......

Listen to the whole album or check out "The Human Equation" by Ayreon. Might give you what you're looking for...

I should say that they made it a double album - the first disc is the "Gentle Version" then they made all the songs more metal and did the "Storm Version". The song I posted above is from the Storm Version. The Gentle Version of the album is pretty sweet too!
