I'm not much for hip hop or rap but I do like a good country tune. Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, the list goes on of hard-drinking, hard-living, damn talented country musicians. They've got the "rock" in their music, if not the "roll."

In a matter of speaking, country and western music was "emo" far before actual emo music ever appeared. A man's dog dies, his girl runs off, his truck breaks down or any variant of those things, that's a solid basis for a country song.

Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" is a good example of emotional tragedy, in a manly fashion. The lyrics go as such

I hear the train a comin'
it's rolling round the bend
and I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when,
I'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' on
but that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Anton..
When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son,
always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns.

now every time I hear that whistle I hang my head and cry..

I bet there's rich folks eating in a fancy dining car
they're probably drinkin' coffee and smoking big cigars.

I bet I'd move just a little further down the line

I'm not big a fan of Garth Brooks. His stuff is a little too slick, manufactured and pop for my tastes. But he's certainly a savvy business man. He nailed the market on catchy country pop tunes, much like Shania Twain also did.

For driving around on a summer day with the windows rolled down and the sun shining, there's no better music than Tom Petty to have playing!:)
