Try first Tolkien (only The Silmarillion), Beagle, Adams, Bakker, Mieville and Pratchett (all books). After these authors I would prefer Le Guin, Leiber, Martin, Gemmell and Peake.

That's the way to go. All put together, they make a decent sized book that has at least a little lasting power. Any one of the books alone is at best a one day read.

Sadly, I have read all of my books, multiple times. I need something new to read, but have no cash to buy. I hate going to the library because if the book is good, I want to own it, and it bugs me to buy a book I've already read.

read sword in the storm first, it will only take a day and it starts the best gemmell series there is!!
then consider phlebas, and the scar.
forget bakker, i still havent read TTT and am only going to if a copy falls out the sky and magically appears on my bed side table with a five pound note as a bookmark and some warm milk and cookies right there behind it. (ps i will know it fell out of the sky by the minature parachute it is wearing!)

I must admit I did get a bit behind in my reading (about 10-12 books at its worst) but have just about managed to catch up now. I can't really have 50 books sitting on my shelf demanding to be read. Not enough time.

In my book, Bakker's THE THOUSANDFOLD THOUGHT and Duncan's VELLUM are two of the best reads of 2006. I'd go for these two to begin with. . .
