That's what it is, alright. I didn't think it was great, but not too bad. It is a little romantic, but there is a romantic element to the story between Gruntle and Stonny. It's not like they were gazing into each others eyes or anything though. They're just standing there holding bloody swords. Didn't seem too sappy to me.

It is the stylized way in which the figures are drawn that irks me ... too reminiscent of sappy romance novels. Look at Gruntle's narrow waist and broad shoulders... and his hair blowing behind him like Fabio or something. Ugh!

UM I showed the US and UK/CA versions of the MoI to an unsuspecting colleague of mine who doesn't read fantasy/sf at all. Well they mentioned the Fabio look-a-like as well!!!! I think the same can be said of MT. I'm detecting a theme in my discussions of the US versions of the books, I don't like them. Artwork some sort of fantasy/romance crossover stuff and the formatting of the text is painful on my eyes. Thank goodness I love the series:)

I don't know why there are different covers for the US market, the UK ones are generally very good (though a bit disconnected from the actual story at times, such as the GotM cover - which appears to be a random jumble of elements from the book - or MT, which makes (what I assume to be) Trull very ugly).

This might be a deliberate attempt to draw in female readers. Or, maybe whoever did the artwork normally does do romance novels. It's p[ossible the artist never even read the books, and might think the silly romace style fits the content, based on what they have been told. Who knows.

His name is Todd Lockwood. He usually draws for D&D and Magic.
Not trying to draw in female readers at all. He honestly cares about what we folks think though. I respect him for that much at least. And I think he's talented. I appreciate his artistic skills, no matter if the illustration is inaccurate. You folks are being incredibly picky. Just my opinion, mind.

And I'll say it again. I honestly have no problem with fantasy covers for books in the fantasy genre.

Great picture! I think it is a lot better than a lot of the other covers of the US versions.

ok so it's the stone bowl... their skins are not grey, the white crow never appeared in that scene, there is no hole in Scabandari's skull...where it's supposed to be ... but it is a pretty nice picture :p far better than some... but it looks like elves in the woods to me

Could it not be a artistic montage? The white crow is important to the story, and therefore on the front. As is Scabby's skull. The British GOTM cover didn't happen in the book, but it was still good! :D

Even Rocky had a montage!

I can only comment on the UK covers, and so will as follows........

GoTM : Good even though, as prev stated, a bit of a jumble

DHG : Excellent, captured the essene of the book, the race to Aren the dryness of the desert etc

MOI : Good, thought he captured the siege of Capustan well enough

HoC : Very good, though the scale of the Hounds is a bit off. The characters standing in front of the hounds don't look anything like Trull or Onrack IMO

MT:Good if boring. Trull looks dog ugly (with a receding hairline or is that how he looks after the Shorning as per start of HoC??), Fear doesn't look much better, if thats him behind him or maybe its Rhulad, although the sword doesn't look mottled enough. and maybe Binadas though I think he's not in the pic as he played a minor role in the overall story. The water I think is in reference to the title

BH:Nice detail but probably the worst of the lot...the street lamps are really off putting....

Shame they were doing well up to HoC.

p.s. Just seen one or two of the US covers...Hoods breath but the MOI cover sucks!!!! looks more like something from John Normans, Gor series ,very Boris Vallejo (spelling) with sculpted chars.....just my two cents (glad we have the 'Bantam books' covers over here!)

Shame they were doing well up to HoC

I thought the MoI cover was the T'lan Imass outside Coral? There weren't any Imass present during the siege of Capustan, and that's clearly a Bonecaster on the front cover.

Prob right Menhir, I loaned the book to a friend some time ago and he lost it on holidays! Been a while since I read it so the memory of the details was a bit sketchy!
Note to self...get friend to buy MoI..then 'borrow' it :p
