For me there were two - Squint, Nil & Nether's despair at Coltaine's death, and Itkovian's taking on the Imass 'burden'.
There were plenty of lump in the throat moments, including the one you mention, but those were my two where real tears flowed and sobs escaped
...and that's not a good look even for a woman of the female variety whilst wearing non waterproof mascara on a busy commuter train :outta:.

'Tell me, Tool, what dominates your thoughts?'
The Imass shrugged before replying. 'I think of Mafia, Adjunct.'
'Do all Imass think about Mafia?'
'No. Few think at all.'
'Why is that?'
The Imass leaned his head to one side and regarded her. 'Because, Adjunct, they are sheeple.'
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that frisbee getting bigger?" ... and then it hits me.

The "and on the Moon, gardens died" part really got to me, actually.

Itkovian. Itkovian all the way. In fact, the whole end of MOI. Runner's up include Felisin (I wanted resolution, damn it!) in third and Udinaas's involuntary betrayal of Rhulad in second. I really wanted that not to happen, but knew it would anyway. I hope that Wyval gets horribly butchered, horribly.
Who are you trying to convince, eh?

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

*Thinks damn that Illy...need to give answer to slap down the cheeky beggar, but can't think of a reply that will also allow me to stay on topic...grrr...wait I know
...*
Not one scene with any of the Fellis made me in the slightest bit sad...annoyed angry and fed up, but not sad.
The thing is it tends to be other character's reactions that get me rather than the event itself - which is why I was so upset for poor old Squint et al. Eveb withh Itkovian it was the scene with the grave, rather than purely the sacrifice itself...does that make sense?
NOW young fellow me lad
:folken: ...
Let me tell you that I am definately and decidedly ALL woman, aint nothing false about me...including my eyeball popping long nails...(OK, my hair colour isn't exactly as nature intended, but that's allowed...)

To an extent, that is true of me - partly from Gruntle's reaction when Itkovian is walking down to the Imass, from the Imass just before he dies, and later at the grave - but mostly from Felisin's death. I found her annoying, and she put me off rereading DG for ages, but when she met Tavore I really wanted her to show her face to her sister, and I was denied! And then the body was taken away, and I missed the chance to see one of the most interesting scenes I've ever anticipated in a book, which is thanks to SE's description of Felisin's last thoughts. That was the closest I've come to liking the crazy thing all series.
But, with Udinaas, it was the fact that after all, he was only a victim, being blamed for abandoning Rhulad against his will that got me. Plus, he's one of my favourite characters, the poor sod. I really didn't want him to 'betray' Rhulad

*ahem*...:folken:? stick to the discussion at hand eh;)
As for my most emotional moment...well it all happens in Memories of Ice. I'm still not over the sight of Caladan Brood lifting the hammer, asking for forgivness and then Moon's Spawn just rising...
leaves me in complete awe every single time.

most emotional moment... (with the emotion being hysterical laughter) would be Kruppe still standing after Brood used the Hammer. the sheer consternation on Brood, not to mention everyone else's face had me rolling.
most emotional Malaz moment was Felisin (not Sha'ik) facing Tavore at the end of DG.

That sounds like a mix of good and bad news...
So what scene would you have as your second moment?

There were 2 moment I cried while reading:
-Coltaines death at the hands of Squint. "But sir, that's Coltaine" damn!
-The entire end of Memories of Ice, when I thought the crying was over, there they were again, those salty tears.

TBH MOI never got me that much. I dunno why. On a reread of DG Icarium got me when Mappos lets out that cry of despair while holding iccy and fiddler starts weeping. WJ death got me a bit but i expected it somehow. I dunno how i just thought he had to die. Terrible of me i know. When Kalam 'dies' at the end of BH wasnt so uch moving but was like
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Kalam fan here btw

Itkovian's funeral. Even on rereads, I go through half a box of kleenex when reading that scene. Sure, there have been other sad moments...but nothing can compare to that.

Without a doubt, Itkovian's death and funeral.

tiam - i like the 'dies' line for Kalam. I picture eyebrows being raised because I don't think it was written so we'd buy it. seemed to be written so we wouldn't buy it in fact. a window to his 'resurrection' if you will... he'll be back...
edit: did you get that i thought that's what you meant? reading back on the post i wasn't sure...

When in HoC karsa Orlong frees the Jaghut from her imprisonment by the Imass, she tells him of the plain which holds all of her kin and how they are imprisoned alive...
That really got to me. So sad.

well, my second most favourite has to be coltaine's death ... but there are really so many scenes that i love in se's writing ... true, he is a friend, but as far as i'm concerned, he is the greatest writer of our generation ...

It depends on what emotion you want to talk about being moved. I was furious at the end of Deadhouse Gates. I wanted to walk up to Pormqual and throw him off the edge so that the soldiers could go out and rescue Coltaine.
For some reason, one of the ones that gets me is when Minala tells Cotillion that she and the kids will not fight at the Throne any longer, and Cotillion agrees with her. Especially when we see him sitting on the ledge with his head in his hands.

There's always the interrment of the BB on Moon's spawn. Also, when Karsa's 2 companions get killed attacking the town, and when his dog gets messed up, and the dog's mate gets killed. Too late to look up names right now. I've always been a sucker for animals getting killed. Remember Beastmaster? Cried like a little girl when his ferret dies. Of course, I was a little kid, but animal deaths in movies and books have always hit me harder than people.

that moment really got me too, philospher77. I loved that SE allows Cotty to have a moment of despair and sadness at the choices he's been forced to make - and that he shows that just because you've ascended, it doesn't mean you've completely disconnected from the human condition. I know it's more or less for certain characters, but I thought this moment was a hugely important one for the understanding of Cotty and ST and helped to bring them down out of the 'godly' world and remind us that they were people who had strong connections - as the malaz army seems to foster.
I thought this was a great moment - and it was so well written by SE, not something you saw coming, but when it happened, it just seemed to fit.
