Apologies if this subject has been broached before (I only just got my copy of BH). In Y'ghatan, those trapped by the fire feel the force of fire elemental (an elemental that was apparently warded off by Sinn); later in the catacombs Fiddler and Bottle and co are saved by a humble rat. Earlier in the series, (in DG) there was a throwaway comment about Gryllen, the Diver's rat - described as "flushed out of Y'ghatan into the fire" - referring to the earlier firestorm - maybe Dassem's siege or even earlier. So what is it with these firestorms? Any ideas, comments?

right now I'm kicking myself and cursing the local bookstore (with kashan) since I still don'i have a copy of DG... Could you supply us with the quote? It always makes the mob more passive and often brings the wonderful presence of rep'points.

No I can't, my DG copy is long lost as well; it was something like "Gryllen, the tide of madness, flushed out of Y'ghatan into the fire" - this may not help you I know.

Flushed out by the fire, I think - I imagine that the Empire's forces ran into Gryllen fleeing from the pillaged, immolated city, and had to deal with him using the many High Mages available then. I love little facts in the older books that spring up in your mind every so often with the newer novels, it's great.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

'Like a seething, lumpy black carpet, the D'ivers rolled over the cobbles. Rats, hundreds. Yet one. Hundreds? Thousands...Gryllen otherwise known as Tide of Madness. Flushed out of Y'Ghatan in the fire'(DG, UK MMPB, p.301)

hail the Wiki!
It would seem as tho' Gryllen was caught in the last seige of YGhatan, tho why a few hundred or so rats couldn't escape the seige seems odd. So maybe he decided to stay because it was more comfortable with all the flying spells and seige rocks and stuff.
- Abyss, has had vacations like that.

"Yes, that's the D'ivers's name. Gryllen, otherwise known as the Tide of Madness. Flushed out of Y'ghatan in the fire. Oh, it comes around, don't it just!"
Is the quote.
