Oversimplifying... dead is dead, it's just that the afterlife is a more flexible concept. People, all races except KC, apparently, have souls. Souls may go somewhere when the body ceases. Most pass through Hood's gate - and it seems Hood is just the gatekeeper, not the caretaker.

Some souls are redirected, into vessels from which they can be transferred into new bodies, or used as 'fuel' for magic of various types.

Back on topic, i tend to agree that gods avoid killing other gods because it may leave them vulnerable to yet other gods. But Ascendants are another thing... they kill each other all over the place.

And, as always, there is no hard and fast rule to ascension, or godhood. Repeat.

- Abyss, ascending to lunch now.

There's a quote at the start of Chapter Six that interests me. Something about the fall of the gods and their war. This seems to foretell the war to come.

Linked to that is something Heboric said about no reconciliation between the new gods and the Elder ones. He said that this was at the heart of all that was to come. That Treach had made his choice and that it was then for the rest of them (gods, presumably) to choose.

Questions:
Any idea which side Treach has chosen? Heboric's musings hinted at some viscillating between the 2 sides and he doesn't clarify Treach's position. As Scillara noticed, Heboric bore some offer of salvation re the jade statues BUT (and this is an important "but," it seems) he's Treach's Destriant now. So does that mean that Treach was in opposition to Heboric completing his mission (i.e., an ally of the CG)?

When gods go to war, do they fight with armies or directly?

Gruntle and Heboric's opposition to the CG's lackeys certainly suggests Trake opposes him. Plus two Kell hunters did kill Trake. That sort of thing tends to piss people off.

As for when gods fight, i suppose it can be mano-y-mano, but more likely they act through mortals linked to them somehow.

- Abyss, prefers taco-y-taco

Yeah but things seem to have developed since then Abyss. It seems that Treach hated the KCCM for obvious reasons but the CG? Who knows what changes have taken place in the pantheon. Just maintaining a open mind so SE can't give me a heart attack Abyss.

I don't really see Treach joining up with the CG. Treach seems to have a sort of "only the strong survive" type of philosophy, which is completely at odds with the CG trying to ally with the weak. And I doubt he'd be recruiting such anti-CG followers if he were on the CG's side either.

Also: the Otataral on SC was created during the Soletaken Ritual. This same Ritual made Treach into a soletaken, correct? HoC also states that the Otataral was created to prepare for the coming of the JG, so that its landing wouldn't have too catastrophic an effect. If Treach fought against the JGs all that time ago, he'd probably be willing to fight against the CG now.

Treach was a Soletaken beforehand, he was horrified by the way the Soletaken Ritual, meant to force an easier path to Soletakenhood, spiralled out of control. And HOC is ambigous about the creation of otataral, whether it was formed to combat the Jade Giants or merely created by the arrival of them.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.
