I'm rereading GotM, and I'd like to add some here. If some of them are GotM'isms, my apologies.

It was actually pretty deliberate. The way they seem to work is completely different to the others. They've been around as long as they others, but are still deeply involved in what's going on, voluntarily. It seems more to do with the fact that Dujek, WJ et al didn't seek power, but just did what was right in their eyes. Kellanved, Dancer, Laseen are all 'playing the game', which has kept them interested, the same way that QB is having a ball.

WJ wasn't broken, but he was tired, and I can't see him have the same drive as The Emperor/Empress. The only thing that would bring him back would be duty to the BB's, and more to the point the belief that they need him.

In the way WJ is described, especially his thoughts, he doesn't seem a broken man, but to me he appears the next thing to it (maybe 'worn out' fits the description better). He is desperate to try and be there for his friends, in this case his fellow BB's and Dujek. After Dujek suggests they disappear after the covert operation in Darujhistan, he thinks along the lines of having to be there if Dujek goes for it.

There is also his reasoning with himself as to WHY he wants Sorry/Apsalar to be a 'normal' girl with a bad streak instead of being possessed by a god. An interesting thing in that passage is that in his thoughts he claims to know how bad it can be when gods do meddle.

Also, somewhere in this part we get a confirmation that the Mason and the Soldier of HH Death are brother and sister. And we know who the Soldier is now :(

I would also be disappointed if he did come back. WJ was running on his last will power already.

???

What does the Seguleh Second (the Soldier) have to do with WJ (the Mason)?

Did I mix up titles?

I was referring to Dunsparrow being in Hood's line-up. No books here, though.

Edit: It said Mason and Soldier of HH Death were related. Maybe this is a GotM'ism or I just misread...

you read correctly, but i always found the place of whiskey jack as a mason suspect. The soldier is a Seguleh. Unless the seguleh only joined HHD after GOTM but that doesn't seem very likely

plus is he has the ability to stand up to Kallor (note: I am basing this on trulls ability to stand up to Iccy) which could show he was on the path already....
Can't see how that proves anything at all about ascension, really.

First off, Kallor is not ascended. How do we know this? The curse he received from the Elder Gods clearly says this (which somehow makes me wonder if the EG can control who ascends and who doesn't...). Now, what does this imply? It means that non-ascended can hold positions in the Houses (Kallor is Reaver of High House of Chains). Thus, Trull and Icarium can both be un-ascended (even though they both hold positions in the Deck of Dragons, one in a house, and the other unaligned), allthough that might be a bit hard to argue...

Besides, we don't really know what "ascended" means. We're just presented with a character and told he/she is ascended, and we don't really know what it implies, except that said character is really hard to kill ;-)

Don't forget, the other curses are wearing off the EG's, perhaps Kallor's curses are fading too... the whole ascending, succeeding and the, um, 'other thing'.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Do we have any indication that the curses are wearing off?

Well, K'rul is back, I guess that's a strong indication, and Nightchill didn't die, but got reborn in a new body, and it seems like Draconus will soon be free of his sword...

Well look at the curses and the way they were worded. All of them came true, the curses, the ones that Kallor gave, never stated anything about never ending.

K'Rul - "you will fade from this world" - which he did
Draconus - "what you create shall be turned upon you" - which happened
Nightchill - "unhuman hands will tear you" - which happened

the curses didn't wear off or were broken...they just came true and that was that. Nothing said that K'Rul would never be able to return or that Draconus wouldn't be able to break free or that Nightchill wouldn't find a new body.

As for the curse on Kallor, there was finallity to them.

K'Rul - "You shall know mortal life unending"
Draconus - "you shall never ascend"
Nightchill - "Each time you rise. you shall then fall blah blah"

Finallity to ALL three curses. Kallor isn't an ascendant, whatever the back of the book says, it can't be trusted all that much in anycase:p

What an absolutely lovely idea! Due to Kallor's bad wording of the curses, the EG can avoid them!

I'd love to see the look on Kallor's face if anyone told him. I'm not a big fan of Kallor... I mean, he's an interesting character, and certainly important, but I have this gut dislike for him.

clearly Kallor failed 'Creative Curses 101', and probably needs to spend some time in diction classes.

- Abyss, so clever, wonders how many got the 'Diction' reference. Hee hee...

So, maybe Kallor should switch houses, and become the Pupil of High House Diction?

More like the dude who has to sit in the corner with the duncecap on.

But it IS an interesting point that Kallor's curses on the EG's 'misfired' so to speak. Probably worth backing up a few posts and starting an on topic thread, this one having drifted.

- Abyss, like internet driftwood.
