Greetings and Salutations All. I won't bother introducing myself here there,s a diferent place for that.
One of my favourite Authors that has been missed so far afer reveiwing this Thread...Paul Edwin Zimmer...{deceased unfortunatly} his books are well worth reading if you can find them! first released around the same time as the first issue of The Swordbearer by Glen Cook [see where my handle came from] way before the books by RJ, GRRM, SE, were first out S,E.s my favourite now though.
these are The Dark Border series of books.
book #1 The Lost Prince
book #2 King Chondo's Ride
these first too are a set and chronological in progression
book#3 A Gathering of Heroes
book#4 Ingulf the Mad
these are stand alone books set before T.L.P & K.C.R altho some of the caracters from the first two are in the 3rd book and book four is set prev to all 3
P.E.Z writing style is very similar to S.E,s and G.C,s in the vast scope of characters and how he writes from both sides an Exerpt you say Ok a quote{from memory} from K.C.R between the old master swordsman Istvan DiVega called the Archer and a young noble Arjun DiFlacca as they ride Towards a confrontation with a Rebelling border Duke Jagat.
** 'Arjun Right?' 'you are Paolo's DiFlacca,s Son Arjun correct?'
'Yes my Lord Istvan I am',
'Ahh Im sorry about your father' I rode with the King, him, Lord Hansur and Jagat when the little prince Jodos Chondo's twin brother went missing 15 years ago, the fact we never found him! this always haunted your father He was the kings best friend.
'Related are you not! to the old king Lord Istvan?'
'Yes a cousin, we share the same great grand father. You look happy young DiFlacca are you looking forward to this confrontation? 'Yes, yes as a matter of fact I am' we ride towards an honorable war man to man non of this bloody border butchery that has been going on all my life.
'Think you Arjun?" that Lord Jagat is an evil man?,
'Why er maybe?", "he must be Lord Istvan he is defying the authority of our new King! Chondo's Divega your own nephew' maybe, then again Lord Jagat is an Honorable man!, a true border Hero. many's the time he and his Sword wheel banner have turned what seemed a lost cause! into a victory. Why just three years past Lord DiVega! when the dark border flared and the Trolls, Vampires, Ghoule's and both grey & black Goblins burst the border above Mahapoor, both the Hastur towers Vigarat and Vikota smashed by Dragon headed Uocht and the greater Dyohles It was Mid-day and the very sun was blotted from the sky and darkness was complete and the vile demons consuming trees root and branch the very soil till nought was left but this poisonous grey dust that we have been riding on for the last twenty miles, all seemed lost till Lord Jagat and his bordermen after having circled around and through the Darkness behind the border, and smote them hard from the rear! just in time to stop them we were very close to being overrun too. He gained help from the Hastur's allso they threw their will behind lord Jagat's forces so all their weapon's burned with blue needfire and non! not even demons could stand against them.
'So you have thought of how he did this Arjun?'.
'Well its simple really, Like you Istvan, the Hastur! they had gifted him with a sword like yours!', for his heroism on the border!, A Hasture blade that burns with needfire whenever there is true evil about "Oh I see if he were evil the Hastur would not have done so.
'No Arjun Lord Jagat is not an evil man!' but others would paint him so to further their own aims, would that I had been here the past few years, perhaps then I would have been able to avert this catastrophy and pound some sense into young Chondos.
'Think you young Diflacca the Border sleeps?' they but use this to weaken us!, they are there! Waiting! starving! forced to feed on each other, held back from crossing the border at night to feed as is their wont, their masters are forcing them back! away from the border, lulling us into not thinking about them as we pursue this useless war weakening ourselves for them!'
'When next the border burns' and it will! 'mark my word!.' with the bordermen 's lives spent there riven bodies cremated the ash spread to feed the fields.' 'Who will face them when the Damned flood accross this realm with non to stand before them!'
Ach I'm getting old. 'Whats that saying the borderers use something about soil?
'Earth my Lord Istvan'. Earth is ever the bride of the warrior. I think you are right we should be attacking them not each other!...
God I love these books I havent read them for years and still I can remember stuff from them Please excuse the punktiation by the way I aint a writer just a part time butcher. {of the english language that is *LOL=}

Hi, I'd like to recommend a dictionary and some works detailing basic grammar - in particular the effective use of paragraphs.
Thanks!
edit: I made it to the end of your post, and I see you apologised for the writing. So sorry if I seem rude. It just bugs me, that's all, especially since this is a forum for discussing works of literature.
Thanks!

Hi Swordbearer,
glad to meet another Dark border fan, love the series characters like Istvan, Arac, Tahion, Carroll, Svaran and Grom have been burnt indelibly into my memory. 25 years on I still get a thrill when I read the last duel between Istvan and Martos and Istvan's exploits in a Gathering of Heroes.
A vastly under-rated series that hardly anyone knows about.
Would love to see the series made into a mini series.
I was fortunate enough to speak to Paul Edwin Zimmer a few times before his untiomely death, nice guy.
