Ah, but when Heboric foudn them in HoC, it was established that they were prisoners, and stuck their against their will. It was also said, I believe, that the millions of people inside the giants were from many different planets. I still think that they are there to heal the huge rent, because it obviously takes a cast number of souls to do so. This would still suggest that either the CG had lost his war, and was escaping, in which case he brought the giants after him to seal the gap so he couldn't be chased, or he was booted out by the other gods and they're sealing it to keep him out.

Either way, I'm pretty sure that it wasn't the mages alone who managed to bring him down. There were mitigating factors on the CG's side, I think.

Earlier enthusiam dampened!! :p I'd just remembered that too a couple of days ago and was meaning to post on Heboric's first encounter with them after rereading the passage.

Going to have rethink after I get to the bit with statues in tBH again.
