To express another opinion,
we know Fener - the Ascendent is somewhere roaming this realm.
If i were Fener i would join my mightiest existing army to do this, and maybe use it, to guard and revenge me. Since i can give no power to it, i would certainly have to allow for some resacration to another god (apart from Treach, who is occupying my place), so i could follow the lead of the "Swords" to deal with the Wolfes: "Open me a door, and we will join",
and, for very sure - since i am not interested in exposing myself, i would say, "i had worked on it for two hard years."
I say look for Fener in this Army.

Why should one god only have one Destriant, on mortal sword and one shield anvil?

Well that's back to the original question...should they, guess there's no reason why not, although the god might not gift each individual with the same level of power if there's more than one of them.

Well, more than one destrian etc would really diminish the power of each one I guess.

If the god is powerful enough everything could be possible.

If the god is powerful enough he/she can have a more powerful destriant, or two mass-market standard models.

Are we certain that the Perish Mortal Sword/Destriant/Shield Anvil are legitimate? (Admittedly I haven't read this far so I am shooting in the dark). In MoI, someone, I believe QB, says something about the titles being used often without actually being real.

errr the size of the ritual seems to have made it real... i mean it takes some serious juice ot get the portal going for 2 years... should be the real thing

The prortal wasn't going for two years, they had been preparing for this one shot use for two years. Which implies less power and more skill then what you said.
But how this effects the fake/real destriant etc. equation I have no idea. To be honest I hadn't even thought of the posibility of the Perish dest. etc. being just honorary titles, and not teh real thing. Will have to think more on that...

Apart from the portal and their knowledge of the Malazans approach what powers have the Perish shown? They seam to be good fighters but as far as warren power goes, they haven't shown that much. Also didn't they need someones help to finish the ritual off (QB i think)?

The Perish might have had honorary titles, until Togg and Fanderay took the beast Throne, and then it became the real thing - as the new gods needed them.

Remember QB's thoughts as he waited aboard ship in Malaz harbour, he could sense that the Destriant (who was above him on the ship) was barely exerting himself to keep the craft defended against the magical chaos over the city. That passage certainly implies the Destriant is backed by real power.

The 2-year portal ritual may have been one-shot, but what a "one-off" it was. They transported their own ships plus Nok's entire fleet! Seriously, there was power behind that.

I still don't like the idea of multiple Destriants/Mortal Swords/Sheild Anvils, it seems to cheapen the idea of a single mortal vessel acting out their deity's will.

Well, if you have two deities then why not use that to your advantage?
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

well you dont need a god to be a mage so its possible that they had mages of normal talent to create the portal. Again we dont know how the whole god priest power things work. Maybe believing in togg was enough to get power from him even though he was lost in choas

Someone made a good point above...

In the Grey Swords... Mortal Sword is Toc (male), Destriant and Sheild Anvil were the Lieutenant (female) and the Recruit (female)...

In the Grey Helms, correct me if i'm wrong, but the genders were reversed.... Mortal Sword female, Destriant male, etc. In the context of Togg/Fanderay, it makes perfect sense.

Sure the Grey Swords were originally sworn to Fener, but events made it pretty clear any number of parties were expecting the switch and Trake had other things going on.

Chances are the Perish positions simply did not become 'official/empowered' until Togg and Fannywaggle (re)ascended to the Beast Throne and the new warren was created.

So in the meantime the Perish, by way of premonition (because that is hardly a novely) were prepping everything, including the spell for the portal, in anticipation.

- Abyss, perishes the thought.

Someone? I've posted that in every Perish discussion thread so far. And yes, in shorthand Grey Helms have F MS, M SA and M Destriant, while Grey Swords have M MS, F SA and F Destriant. Gah. And I'm not making a multiple positions joke! I'll leave that to Abyss.
