I think there was mention somewhere of the fortress not being human-built - it could be either Forkrul Assail or Toblakai, or something (it didn't seem at all like K'Chain Chemalle work, however). Whoever it was will be who imprisoned the short-tail.

'A beehive tomb....but not one in a style Karsa had seen before.. Too large, for one thing, and there was no evidence of platforms or sarcophagi. No grave-goods, no inscriptions'

Forkrul assail? They should be prone to imprison things. In the name of peace...

Even though the fortress was ancient, can we be absolutely certain that the KCNR has been there for thousands of years? Is it not at least a slight possibility that someone of sufficient power came across one relatively recently - they seem to be returning from somewhere - and chained it up there?

On the other hand, do we know much, if anything, of the expected lifespan of K'Chain?
'This is my timey-wimey detector. Goes 'ding' when there's stuff. Also, it can boil an egg at 30 paces - whether you want it to or not, actually, so I've had to keep away from chickens. It's not good when they blow.'

KCNR are very technological, perhaps they invented the alchemies that keep Kallor young(ish), and have a far superior version than him.

But, the whole barrow thing is one of the few issues I have with SE, the way most books have a convienent member of an Elder species being remarked upon in this book, escaping from a barrow and causing havoc before being beaten back/killed. People should really stop digging in the Malazan world, they'll live longer.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

That is very real though, people are curious creatures, and often we learn things in our explorations that we would rather not know..Thankfully there arnt any monsters buried around us, because I have no doubt we would dig them out simply for curiousity.

I really didn't like that part, when Paran was just mosying by on his horse and suddenly Ganath breaks free nearby, after hundreds of thousands of years of imprisonment. Couldn't suspend my disbelief for that coincidence.

Which warren was her imprisonment? If its a younger one there is this explanation: Paran had an Otataral sword with him, didn't he?

Besides, even his presence could have some influence on rituals/bindings, he is a quite powerful typo

But even this said, i'd agree...it did strike me as odd, too but it didn't bother me much

Also, why did Paran take that exact route? Perhaps he knew something was going to happen there and thus went that way at that time?
