I'm re-reading MoI and I am dissatisfied with Gruntle's becoming Mortal Sword. Shouldn't there be something more to it than just him getting POd at Stonny's rape? Something mystical or spiritual rather than just him get mad, picking up the cutlasses, and taking charge in the battle. There has to be more to it than that. I know he gets the stripes and the cat-eyes, but what triggers all that?

I think he would have had the transformation with or without the fighting - Treach chose him whether he liked it or not.

In a similar way to
HoC spoiler
there was no mystical moment, it just happened.
You might argue Treach brought about the rape of Stonny to mould Gruntle into a better Mortal Sword, but tigers are not generally noted for their subtle planning. I think it was just a coincidence, and Treach is the sort of god who just picks someone and makes it so. No theatrics, or really any choice for that matter.
just testing

You can use square brackets like these [ spoiler ] and [/spoiler ] (without the spaces) at the beginning and endings of the text you wish to hide.
likewise you can use the i and /i in square brackets for italic, b and /b for bold, and quote /quote

As for what triggered Gruntle's transformation ... I always thought Keruli's (K'rul) calling in favours from his 'friends' as Stonny referred to them, had summat to do with it. Remember when the caravan were attacked by the K'Chainies in MoI? It can be no coincidence that both Tog and Fanderay and Treach have both risen to pre-emmimence since K'rul's return to this realm. There's a theme thing going on here and it's all to do with Elder and yet-Elder still power

OK, Hetan's response makes it seem more logical now. There had to be some sort of conduit for the power, or else some kind of action on someone's part. Not just Gruntle gets mad, Treach makes him Mortal Sword. Keruli's contacting his "friends" works.

That never occured to me Hetan (and thanks for the tips). But it does make sense. I guess he would know Togg and Fanderay, since they were all "born of chaos" waaaay back when. And Trake was a First Hero of the First (human) Empire (right? I'm sure he's a First Hero, and that means he's a Soletaken of Ryllandaras and Gryllen vintage, yes?) and I'm pretty sure K'rul was still kicking around in First Empire days.
But does that mean he played a part in the casting down of Fener too?
So if he's bringing back all his buddies and putting them in positions of power, does this mean we'll be seeing more of Kilmandaros? Because I would love to see her get some face time.
He might engineer the destruction of Dragnipur to free Draconus!
