I have just finished my first reread of MT and am slightly confused on a point. Did Trull and Fear not want to kill Rhulad because he was their brother and did not want to kill one of their kin, or did they not want him to live and leave him there uncapable of ruling the TE?

they didn't want him leading the TE. brys gave them a perfect solution on how to get rid of rhulad. would any of the edur kill rhulad had not the guardian shown up? - imo i dont think so

Yeah I agree but I also slightly got the impression that it was too hard to kill their own brother.

Well they wouldn't have a problem killing him if they wanted him to rule...they know what will happen so its not like they are actually "killing" him!
They (espessially Trull) just didnt want him to rule! imao

I think it was a bit of both. They (Trull & Fear) figured out that each time he died he came back more insane and nasty but neither, by that time, had the heart to kill him. Also at the end Rhulad seems to be realizing that Brys may have done him a kindness, as he wasn't dead but couldn't rule. The book says he can't be healed by anything but the sword, which will only bring him back to life not heal wounds as such.

It seemed to be apparent to Trull and Fear that each time Rhulad died and came back, he was a little more powerful, and a little more insane.
I thought that they were content to leave him disabled, not out of any hesitation to just stab him in the head and bring him back, but to keep him from ruling.
- Abyss, "Oh my god, they killed Rhulad!! Those b@stards!!!"

Oh yes, I thought that exact line many times reading MT.
So Rhulad comes back bearing the wound that killed him. What happens if you just slice his head clean off? Or cremate him...

I think it was a bit of pity that stopped them, they saw taht each time he came back he was more and more the criipled gods creature and less TE, they thought by leaving him like he was would be better for him, and better for their people
