I got gifted Looking for Jake the other day. Grim. But good.
The story of the woman in the white room (can't remember the title) freaked me out, as did The Ball Room, for some reason.
I thoroughly enjoyed the titular story, The Tain, Reports of Certain Events in London though. And I liked 'Jack' too. He does have some rather nifty ideas.

I am currently reading Perdido Street Station, and am thoroughly enjoying it. I find it interesting though, that the plot (at least so far, p.300) seems to move along at a rather slow pace. And yet, the book is a page-turner. Normally if another book was paced similarly, I would have probably been too bored to continue... I don't know what it is about this book, it is the first of Mieville's that I've ever read, so maybe I'm just really enjoying his style, which as a writer, is quite exciting. While there are authors whose style I do enjoy (Erikson, Martin etc) it is mainly for the characters and plot that I read them. But I have the feeling that it wouldn't matter what Mieville wrote about, or who he wrote about, I would still find it an enjoyable read. It is a rare and gifted writer that can do this. Has anyone else had a similar experience or view on this or any other of Mieville's works?

Yes! Like you I've only read "Perdido Street Station" and found the plot fairly uninteresting. Though I think it was the weird creatures and characters that kept me going more than the writing (which is good).

Well, Mieville is a terrific writer, style wise - it is his style that you notice first, especially in PSS. But, in his other two novels I've read the pacing's more traditional - it doesn't take quite so long to get going, I think. PSS is an exercise in building the world and city, so the plot does take a long while to get going before things happen.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.
