Starting the Dresden books tomorrow. I've finally gotten around to it after an exposition of Butcher's hilarity by a wise friend.

I finished up Tides from the New Worlds by Tobias Buckell. It's a collection of his short stories that I enjoyed very much. But it's a limited edition and not widely available. (review)

I'm now reading The Affinity Bridge by George Mann.

Finished reading Simon Woodworth's 'Through Violet Eyes', a police procedural/urban fantasy thriller where a serial killer is hunting down people who can channel the spirits of the dead. I loved the concept and the work that had gone into the background setting but the elements of the plot and the characters were far too predictable to make this book really stand out. My full review is over Here. I'm now reading Max Allan Collins' novelisation of the new GI Joe movie. It's ok but isn't really anything special so far...

Finished All You Need Is Kill which turned out to have an interesting surprise buried within it. I think I shall be reading some more Japanese sf in the future. If I can just find a translation of Battle Fairy Yukikaze, I shall be quite happy.

Currently re-reading Alastair Raynolds' The Prefect, which is more fun second time around, when I'm not so heavily invested in finding out what happens next. The little throwaway details become far more entertaining, I've found.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Finally started reading The Warrior Prophet by Bakker. Like the first one it starts a ittle slowly but I'm not extremely worried about it. I've got faith in Bakker.(Although I really hope Akka does somethingin this book). Anyway Achamian's dream was great.

I'm on to the fourth of the Codex Alera books, Princep's Fury. Despite it's slow start, the series has drastically improved with each book. I was incredibly impressed with the third book in the series, and book four looks like it will continue on in the same vein.

After reading my way straight through the Dresden Files and moving right on to Codex Alera, I must admit, I am a massive Butcher fan. I would recommend his books to anyone who hasn't read them, although it seems like I'm one of the only people left on this board who hadn't read his work. I've even managed to get my brother, who never reads, hooked on the Dresden Series.

Now reading Galileo's Dream by Kim Stanley Robinson. Robinson usually does issue-driven 'serious' SF so this book is a bit of a surprise. It's more of a relaxed and light 'what if?' SF story about people from the future time-travelling back to change history by helping Galileo with his scientific discoveries. Galileo is an excellent character, the historical detail is well-done and there's a good sense of humour to things.

Finished reading Max Allan Collins' novelisation of the new GI Joe movie. If the story had been fleshed out a little more then this could have been good. What we get though is a retelling of the movie without the impact that it would have on the screen, it felt like half a story to me... My full review is over Here. I'm now finishing off 'The Hunger Games' (Suzanne Collins).

I just finished the first Thomas Covenant trilogy. Simply....incredible. However, it was slow in parts.

I finally bit the bullet, and have decided to start the Wheel of Time series. Hopefully, it will be enough reading to tide me over to the next Malazan release.

Just finished Carlos Ruiz Zafón's excellent The Angel's Game. Though it may not be as amazing as The Shadow of the Wind, it is nevertheless one of the best books you'll read this year.

Check the blog for the full review. . .

Yesterday was Captain's Fury, today I'm right on to Princep's Fury. Book four in the Codex Alera series was excellent! There is no sign of things slowing down, or of any drop in quality. As always Butcher's books are highly readable and not overly complicated. It's just straightforward quality writing. I''m going to be at a loss once I finish this book, no more Dresden and no more Codex! I guess I'll have to tide myself over with re-reads until the next ones fome out.

Excellent series! Although it did seem to drag a bit in the last few books of the series, and lose some of the excitement. Still, one of the best series I've read in a long time.

Finished reading 'The Hunger Games' which is very much 'Battle Royale' for eleven year olds (and up). While it's a great read (well drawn world full of exciting and tense moments) I couldn't help thinking that it's target audience stopped the author from fully exploring some of the themes under discussion. To be fair though, if I was an eleven year old reading this for the first time I'd probably be saying something quite different! My full review is over Here. I'm now midway through Jasper Kent's 'Twelve', hoping to finish it for tomorrow but it's been heavy going so far...

Reading S.M. Peter's Whitechapel Gods-it's quite good, too bad it's so short. The premise of the whole mechanised, modern city is fascinating. I think someone else recommended this...can't remember who.

The first of Asimov's Foundation books. I needed a quick read and this was suggested to me by DW. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, but so far so good.

Good luck with that. About 5 years ago, I sat down and read the entirety of Asimov's Robots/Empire/Foundation books in a row. The original Foundation trilogy (especially the first book) bored me to tears. Asimov's best stuff (IMHO) is his four R. Daneel Olivaw books.

May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Eek, that doesn't bode well! Hopefully it's not too agonizing, I really just needed a quick read to fill some time. I'm reading the Codex Alera series with KM and he's fallen behind a bit, so I'm reading this to give him a chance to catch up. I know DW had mentioned that it was originally a series of short stories that Asimov rewrote to combine them into one book. It definitely reads that way so far. Sci-fi irritates me at the best of time. Although next time I'm looking for a filler read I will pick up one of the four book you mentioned. You were the one after all who turned me onto the Black Company books, so I trust your taste and judgement.
