I started and finished very quickly Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology. It was outstanding! Such a wonderful way of telling the stories, written in a way that feels like it should be told orally rather than written down. Fascinating too if you're into the Norse myths and suchlike. Very quick read as well, definitely recommended.

Awesome! My wife bought me a copy of this a while back and I've not gotten to it yet, glad to hear it's solid!

IRON AND MAGIC. About half way thru.
Kateamine fans take note, I think you're going to want to read this before MAGIC WHATEVERS streets in August.

I have recently read this. Its really quite good, and may work well as a spin off series. Though I think they watered down Hugh a bit to make him a protagonist.
...

Just finished. Totally enjoyed, the action scenes are on par with some of the bigger ones from the later Kate books. I suspect a few of the developments will be relevant to the main series.
Hugh’s character shift is well handled. He retains a lot of what made him a good villain. Elara is a solid co-star.

Just finished Brust's Hawk, and...I'm really disappointed that I'm all caught up on this series! I want the rest of the books to be written and published.

You've actually got one more in the main series to go. VALLISTA dropped in 2017. The Khaavren Romances tie in as well and are thoroughly enjoyable.

True! I didn't include Vallista because I'm waiting for the paperback to be released (to match the prior books in the series).

Starting Williams' Stone of Farewell. This is a a doorstopper of a book.

I liked Vallista quite a bit. He took a risk doing it that way and I think it works.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Finished The Tiger and the Wolf and thoroughly enjoyed it. Got book 2, The Bear and the Serpent ready to go, although I may read something else first to break things up a bit.

What's the pacing like in these books? I have liked practically everything else by Tchaikovsky so I will give these a shot.

I just finished Tchaikovsky's short novel - The Expert System's Brother. Its a nice little read. Currently reading his Redemption's Blade which is quite good.

There are a few chapters of scene setting at the start, as you'd expect but once it got going it moved along at quite a clip. I did think, at one point, that there was a tad too much of the characters escaping one crisis only to walk straight into another but it was a minor gripe.

I finished Throne of the Crescent Moon, it was very enjoyable. It was nice reading a fantasy novel rooted in a middle eastern world. Although, I'm now reading Children of Earth and Sky by Kay for I'm back to a European based world.

I started that last weekend but got side tracked. The first chapter made me dubious but once the ghost busting solicitation begins it caught my interest.

About 40 pages in and my interest is not piqued enough, but yah, the opening was a bit of a flop for me with what it was trying.
He does have some wonderful turns of phrase though.
'bewailing the lack of adequate facilities for the long term incarceration of those whose crimes are occasioned not by malice or deviant passion but purely and simply by their being as crazy as shithouse rats.'

I want to be able to spin a line like that

Finished Anthony Ryan's THE WAKING FIRE. Really solid and interesting stuff. Some fresh fantasy aspects in there, and some mashup stuff to boot. Compelling characters, and a quick pace. A few MINOR draggy sections, but only a few. I'm not entirely sure I get what the purpose is yet for Hilemore's plot line...but it was entertaining nonetheless. Will definitely be reading the sequel at some point.

Back to finishing Ben Kane's HUNTING THE EAGLES, which is stellar of course.

A bit past halfway on Felix castor book one.

It's engaging yes, but sometimes irritating, even if I can't give voice to what is irritating me
