right now that's "Heroes Die" and "Farlander". So Stover will probably be the next commute read.

This is the right fucking decision and you already know how all of us were going to fucking react to this. It's about damn time.

Why does fucking everyone fucking swear about these fucking books?

Wait a minute here. Have you not fucking read Stover's Acts of Caine books? Maark, these need to jump straight to the top of your trp. You, in particular, are going to fucking love these books.

Are you fucking sure? Because I'm always up for a fucking recommendation.

Definitely. I didn't like the first half of the second book much but overall these are amazing books. Cain Black knife is a fucking boss.

Finished Midnight Front by Mack. It was a very fun book, though it got really dark at times. It is a "secret history" of WW 2 with magic, demons etc.

Though I am not normally a fan of self published books I am really enjoying The Thief who Pulled on Trouble's Braids by Mcclung. It has some Scott Lynch vibes and a lot of fun so far.

210 pages into Authority. That deputy director of the Southern Reach is a real piece of shit. I'm disappointed Control hasn't just gotten into a fist fight with her yet and choked the life out of that bitch. Man is she frustrating, made more so by Control's lacking willingness to put a boot on her neck. Figuratively and literally.

Nah I think it can sit in after BH cos the story of Mallick Rel etc follows nicely. I think RG happens around the same time...

Everyone emphasizes the "before TTH" thing that it sometimes comes off as "immediately before TTH", I guess. But it ultimately doesn't matter a huge amount because the cross-references are verrrry oblique...it mostly just matters which way you'd prefer to connect the dots in your head, which isn't helpful on a first read cuz you won't know until you do it, and if it's a reread you won't need to connect the dots anyway. Some call this the Schrodinger's Mobius Strip.

Exactly. Probably going to read SW before RG too though I've not decided yet.

It's just playful fucking exaggeration about the colorful language Caine employs throughout the series. You won't see a ton of it just reading HEROES DIE (outside some fun turns of phrase) but it picks up in BLADE OF TYSHALLE and comes to a (fucking) head in CAINE BLACK KNIFE.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I mean, I just pulled up eBay right now and the top 3 hits are under $14 shipped...

Well, Too Like The Lightning didn't go anything like I thought it was going to. It really does ramp up. Gonna dive into the second one immediately (though, warning, I read the blurb for the second one while downloading it and it spoils a fairly major part of the premise that hasn't yet been revealed at the end of the first, so if you get into it, just jump into the second without looking at the blurb).
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Finished Abercrombie's HALF A KING. What a great little book! Really quite impressed that he was able to switch up his writing style enough to pull out a YA offering like that.

I will only say that I knew:

Spoiler

Anyways, excited to read the other two volumes in the series.

Finished The Book of Dust. Absolutely incredible, delightful, and surprisingly harrowing for a prequel. Lyra's world has lots of wonders not explored in HDM, and even though this book was rather more dour a start than TGC/TNL, the journey was just as gripping.

Finally finished the second Southern Reach book, Authority. I think it's a good book, very well written but I came to dislike this story. It took me 1 day to read the first half. It took me 5 days to read the second half.

I feel like this book goes nowhere and then suddenly tries to do a lot of things it should have been doing from the start. I feel like this book got too caught up in building the Control character as an opposite to the Biologist and spent far too little time with what I actually wanted to read about - The mystery of Area X and Southern Reaches research.

While the book takes place over a relatively short time span, I found Controls lack of "control" and preparation before assuming his role frustrating and unbelievable. Nothing happened in that book for 250 pages and then suddenly a lot of stuff happens and none of it really gets the exposure I wanted it to.

Ah well, hopefully Book 3: Acceptance ties all the story threads together.

EDIT: Also, seriously, fuck that deputy director woman. I hope she gets mindflayed for a million years.
