I'm also curious about this mention of "The Board". I don't remember them. What the hell have they been doing. Are they even scarier than Mahogany Row? Or are they just various members of Mahogany Row we don't hear about? So many questions. It's dangerous to go years between books in a somewhat complicated series.

Finished Fool and Mortals by Bernard Cornwell


I'm kind of on the fence on this one.
On one hand it's a well written story, with engaging characters and a reasonably believable plot.
On the other hand, I guess is my problem not the books, I went in expecting Bernard Cornwell, I was waiting for a hero who takes a beating, has a loyal follower and some lady friends. I guess it stays true to Cornwell in its obvious dislike of organised religion.

It's something very different, it's a short character orientated piece, I guess it suits the setting, Shakespeare's London, and the players themselves.

I probably won't read it again, and wouldn't recommend picking it up at hardback price, but it's a charming enough little book in its way, pick it up second hand or on offer if you enjoy Shakespeare's work and want a bit of fun fiction based around him

I started Dancer's Lament. I had wanted to knock out a few more on going series that I've been reading before starting something new-ish, but the high marks Deadhouse Landing is getting here won me over.

Started heretics of dune this evening.
Tired after a long day so just read 30 pages to get started.

I'm impressed how Herbert is confident enough to span such a timescale where, bar the gholas, no characters really have continuity from books one and two

Finished Stealer's War The ending wraps up a number of characters' arcs nicely, but leaves the world wide open for more. And a few of those implications and revelations certainly make me want to see more.

In the meantime, Deadhouse Landing will now be at home and commute book.

Not expecting that one to last long, so I'll start lining up next few reads. At home, hitting the TRP from its very bottom, it'll be Black Prism - my first Brent Weeks book.

In commute... working along the same lines, it'll be Judas Unchained

Edit: nope, Deadhouse Landing won't become a commute book. Because I couldn't put it down till almost 2 AM.

Dammit.

Wall of Storms really picks up! Stay with it! The new threat in this book is basically the Mongols led by Genghis Khahn riding dragons! It is awesome! I read it when it first came out, so memory is a little foggy, but I remember that this book really takes flight after the two friends conclude their "mirror war" that they instigate. I believe that concludes with the ending of part two.

Still going through Godblind don't know why but it feels like it is less interesting the further towards the end I'm getting and I was kind of liking it about half way in. Only got a bit left so I'll finish it. Pretty sure I'm also a bit annoyed at the authors use of place and people namns don't seem like they would be from the same culture at least not in such a tiny kingdom.

I've read 3 books of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey&Maturin series in the past 10 days and am now on the fourth.

I found it after finishing with the Sharpe series (great fighting, great battles, terrible at everything else). it's Napoleonic era seafaring adventure at its best. A lot of marine terms I have to search up but the prose is beautiful enough that I don't mind and the characters strong enough that I can't stop. At this point, I can name about twenty different sails on a sloop or frigate correctly and name most of the maneuvers that a sailing ship can perform- I'm hoping I'd be an able seaman by the end of the whole (20 books!!!) series.

What are you talking about? Sean Bean has survived the Trojan War, the Napoleonic Wars, and was wise enough to escape from a team of special operatives intent on stealing a McGuffin Case.

After about 50 pages of "Judas Unchained" I realized I should probably re-read "Pandora's Star" first. It's been 3 years (I think), and I was kinda lost.

At home, a few chapters into "Black Prism" . Weeks' pacing is pretty crispy, hopefully it keeps up like this.

I never finished Black Prism. I was so close to the ending too. I loved the concept of the magic system but I loathed that fat Pug-wannabe of a kid protagonist. I couldn't stomach the idea of having to read 5 books or more of that dumb bastards bumblings.
