I've finally started Gunmetal Magic in earbook. Enjoyable so far, but I miss Kate. Andrea is a bit too hung up on a particular situation for my tastes at the moment. I really hope that resolves itself sooner rather than later. Her little hangup has had their first encounter. Draaaaaaaama.

I dunno. Without going spoilers in this thread, i think it's fair to say the alien stuff has been there since the beginning. It's just not the focus of the story. GATE, arguably the most alien-centric of the series so far, was also the least interesting.

What I'm saying is that the "least interesting" part is because Corey hasn't figured out where in the giant sandbox to go with that chunk of the story. They put into place key parts of Babylon's Ashes and Nemesis Games as far back as Abbadon's Gate and Cibola Burn. They have thus far signaled that they have interest in aliens beyond the remnants of gone civilizations and the protomolecule keeps popping back up. The clearest bit of scene setting has been materials science thus far and the disappearance of odd ships.

I think it's coming, but they had to figure out where exactly to go with the alien stuff, and if that required changes in the Sol system stuff as well. Planning the track before they start laying it, so to speak.

They've said for years that they know how the story ends. Whether this means they know where the alien storyline will wind and wend, I don't know.

I thought the impact of the alien stuff on the human civilization as it was pre protomolecule is one of the most interesting aspects. Particularly Mars.

Someone lent me the Lightbringer series and for my birthday I got the complete Amber collection by Roger Zelazny, so I'm looking forward to both!

Yeah Lightbringer is meant to be better than Night Angel, which I enjoyed.

None of them say which order it's meant to be read in though... ;)

On pg 77 of Expanse 5. I forgot how slow I found this one when I 1st started it last yr.

The slow initial build is worth it. Book five explodes in the best possible way.

It was supposed to be a quartet but he announced that he had to split the fourth into two books before The Blood Mirror was released.

Started Joe Mcdermott's Fortress at the End of Time. Recent release. To be perfectly frank I don't like it.

Finished my 12th read of Richard Adams's Shardik. Just as amazing as the previous 11 times. I read the UK Kindle edition, though, which had its share of typos. (Not to mention a lot of "I don't think that's the word I remember Adams using?" occurrences that might have been typos.)

Oddly feeling the itch to reread Wolfe's Peace, so I'll be grabbing that off the shelf shortly after I hit "Post" here...
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Just finished catch 22.

I can see why some people would not like this novel. It's comedy is almost slap stick at times, and it does (in the middle) seem to be meandering to nowhere.
But I loved it.

Starting Nights of Villjamur, by Mark Charan Newton.

Know zero about it, so going in with no expectations.

It's interesting so far, decent set up and an easy to read prose. Man must have swallowed a thesaurus somewhere along the line, I like to think I have a reasonable vocabulary but there's once or twice I've had to contextualise a word to figure out what the fuck it means

I'm going through The White Luck Warrior at the moment. Loving the twists and turns the story has been taking in the second trilogy. For example, I know it's intentional but

Finished Hanging Tree. Definitely recommend earbook as the narrator is fantastic. The book itself is good. None have compared to the first two though. Also, Babylon's Ashes was alright. A lot of filler. Agree that I wish things would take a more alien turn. A Close and Common Orbit is completely different from Long Way. Completely different. Doesn't even have the same cast. Not bad but just wasn't expecting the change.

Finished "The Mirror Empire". Already started "Empire Ascendant"

There's some really neat concepts here. A lot of the characters are pretty formulaic, but the plot takes some neat twists, and the main concept sets up the plot for multiple betrayals and gambit pileups. Fascinating story, and pretty decent world-building to go along with it.

Finished the 2nd Troy book. Pretty intense ending, I hope for a few things in book 3:

Hektor vs Achilles 2: Electric Boogaloo
Helikaon in mad kill spree across the med
Odysseus takes out Agamemnon in surprise twist, coming out of nowhere with a STEEL CHAIR!
Andromache knees Priam in the plums.

Well, I have finished book 3 and I actually kind of got 3 out of the 4 of these! Pretty good going!

Really enjoyed the series thanks for the recco, Macros and others.

Just debating what to read next. Thinking Lightbringer but I'm not sure I want to start an incomplete series...
