Finished "Hounded" , the first Iron Druid novel by Kevin Hearne.

Not bad, UrbF in the vein of "all gods are real". Decent action, infodumps on Celtic mythology, and humour. Will probably pick up sequel at some point.

I'll need to think about my next at-home read- I want to time finishing it with "Gloriana", so that I can then power thru the Deepgate codex trilo. But "Gloriana" is not coming along too well, as I'm not being gripped and barely fitting a few chapters a day during my commute home before zoning out.

EDIT: settled on Carrie Patel's "The Buried Life", which was an impulse-buy as I liked the blurb of Bk2.

The Iron Druid series is wildly inconsistent. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's the opposite, and for the love of your eardrums avoid the audiobooks.

Deepgate...read book one. Absolutely read book one. But book two, tho enjoyable, leads directly into book three and book three makes eyes bleed.

Deepgate...read book one. Absolutely read book one. But book two, tho enjoyable, leads directly into book three and book three makes eyes bleed.

For the nth time, I've read 1 + 2 before, gonna re-read and then power thru 3, fully aware of how terrible it's supposed to be.
I occasionally find that when read back-to-back mediocre series enders don't stand out as poorly as when spaced out. For instance, I re-read both Gentlemen Bastards books right before "Republic of Thieves" and I foun it okay, despite the downright weird ending.

I've read 'em a while back and they were ok. Kinda like Dan Simmons' stuff in that you need to be an English major . Get the most out of it (and i'm not one) Anyways, it's books 2and 3 that should've been one, and I read on vacation back to back so it's kind of like reading 3 books,

That bein said, I didn't feel any of it was pure filler either. Like I said, I have only passing acquaintance with English classics, so I just took the whole thing as one trippy cyberspace VR-imagination-land ride. With the fucking scary Jackal.

I just finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I feel that it lived up to all of the hype that it has acquired over the years. The story was very well told, and the twist that the fae pulled was both straight and terrifying.

Next I'm back into my listen of the Dresdencrack with Proven Guilty.

No, I've been saving it for when I finished the book. I just didn't want to ruin a book that had been sitting on my trp for the last five years by watching it first. I do have both it and The Last Kingdom lined up on my watch list now though.

I don't think I've ever read anything by Williams, apart from being bored stiff by the beginning third or so of the first M/S/T book.

Aging rocker's (30's) pregnant girlfriend has a horrific miscarriage, followed by her leaving him claiming she was only sticking with him because of the baby, and a few months go by as he rearranges and gets his life back mostly to square, only to discover his mother has cancer and has to watch her deteriorate and die.

It's a fucking bleak opening for a fantasy novel.
