Well, just finished reading Ash: A Secret History by Mary Gentle. This is certainly the largest book I've ever read, and while the author has obviously done her research, I felt that a lot of the book could've been cut out without sacrificing any of the story. I really didn't predict where the story was going, which was a pleasant surprise and the last 100 pages made the up for a lot of the slower parts. Left feeling rather drained now and no idea what I'm in the mood to read next, something lighter though!

Well that didn't take long....

Finished Skin Game

About halfway through I was thinking of how I never really enjoyed the post "Changes" dresden books as much, with the rapid shift in tone and all.

Then I got on the transit on the way home, and thne I got home, and I've just put it down, at 2 AM. And it feels like I was wrong. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Since I seem to b on a roll with finally catching up with a whole bunch of epic-to-solid books at the moment, I'm thinking I may as well have a crack at "Republic of Thieves". On the other hand, given I don't remember much of it, I may just do a Gentlemen Bastards re-read first, Starting with Lies of Locke Lamora.

You'd think by now but nope, every time someone new starts that series it's initially wow hey cool ew black spunk and then by the second or third book it's all MY EYES.Honestly.

About 3/4 of the way through Grossman's MAGICIANS LAND on earbook and damn, that was one of the coolest most fun fantasy lit chase scenes I have ever read/heard/whatever. This series is great.

I'm re-listening to Blue Remembered Earth; love the book and the narrator. Also listening to the Grace of Kings and Vlad Taltos #4, and just bought #5 and 6.

Found a hardcover copy of Postscripts #10 on the clearance rack yesterday, so I grabbed it for $2 and read SE's "This Rich Evil Sound". Beautiful story.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

It's a truly beautiful story. I love how it manages to be more haunting by language alone and despite not featuring any of the zombie/nuke/end of the world stuff the otehr stories in the anthology feature. Such a beautiful piece of writing.

You get this building sense of foreboding and dread, and then the payoff comes and it's just sad. But the language and imagery used to get there is breathtaking. Shortly after finishing it, I had an image in my head of some of the other contributors (Stephen King, say) reading through the collection and getting to SE's story and just going, "Wow, how does he do that?" :)

Nearing the end of the 5th Kate Daniels book...it's bloody awesome BTW...and I decided to just buy the other two remaining books (that are out...the new one comes out in August) MAGIC RISES and MAGIC BREAKS in one trip to the bookstore. I figured I can go all in on this series now.

Bit of a gamechanger in the next book, but I really liked it as certain boundaries were broken. I actually didn't like book 5 as much as book 4 probably because that last fight and what happened after in 4 is just so badass

It originally appeared in 1998's Revolvo and Other Canadian Tales, published under the name Steve Lundin.
