Finished Alera 5- Princeps' Fury.

Like this one. multiple PoVs, none of which are really super-pwning everyone. In fact, having the protagonists on the ropes makes for better story with Butcher.

Strong set up for a good conclusion, but not gonna read First Lords's Fury just yet.

Instead i started "Quantum Thief" by Hannu Rajaniemi

Reading Tomorrow, the Killing, by Daniel Polanski, read the straight razor cure a while back.and loved it, sequels.much of the same.
Struggling to get into Assail and The Winter King, this is a welcome light diversion

Reading the Blinding Knife by Brent Weeks. I enjoyed the Nightangel trilogy far more than this one. Looking like the third book will be a library pick up, or skipped depending on how the rest of this one plays out.

Finished Larry Nivens Beowulfs children. Really enjoyed that read. I had forgotten how much I liked a bit of old-style sci-fi. Its been years since I read any, what with having finshed Asimov and Clarke, and finding good fantasy books to read.
Any suggestions for other good sci-fi? I mean not the current authors - Reynolds, Hamilton, Asher, Banks etc. but something older, contemporary to Niven, 70s-80s maybe.

I'll have to bump Beowulf's Children up my TBR pile - I re-read The Legacy of Heorot a few months back in preparation to read BC and then never got round to it Posted Image

Still reading Shogun - currently 920 pages in.

Reading Larry Nivens Fleet of Worlds, just reading the first few pages. Seems good so far, but something funny is happening. Every time I read a line like for example "“On full throttle, sir, as you had specified.” I keep on remembering Se's Wilful Child and I start giggling thinking of all the crazy things that SE would have done in a situation like this. Oh SE, what have you done to space opera?!

I've got "Wise Man's Fear" at home from the library, but can't get up the interest to start it. I liked the previous book, but I couldn't read anything for 2 months after finishing it. I'm not sure what that's about, I don't recall having that problem before. The book had some issues, but kept my full attention while reading it.

Anybody want to offer some comments about this book? I don't want to get sucked into a book that will command my spare time, as I won't do anything else productive when I am mid-novel, and I have a lot of work to get done -and especially if that book is not the greatest. I have considered returning it to the library un-read.

Hmmm, I thought it was a slight step down from the first novel but still entertaining, minus a certain section that was stupider and more prolonged than the dragon cow, see abyss for details.

Ymmv, some love it to bits, I 'meh' it

Agree with the above statement in full. Including the prologned stupid section which I also did not care for.

Well, unless somebody else gives me a convincing rebuttal, I will skip it. I hate to be like that, but there is only so much time in a day.

Thanks guys

Its been some time since I read this, but I remember it to be quite good. My one gripe I think was pace, but some rather important stuff did happen here. The thing about Rothfuss is that he does not write anything really new, In fact book 1 reads like your standard YA, book 2 is heros journey, but what I liked about these books was style. Rothfuss' writing style I think stands out. And I may be on my own here, but I looked forward to those tiny parts at the present where the story is being told.

Everything you say is true.

I really enjoy the aspect of the mystery of the vengeance forthcoming and how it plays out. I have my theory about how his time growing up and what occurred to him, his experiences. Everyone still thinks he is the hero...which amuses me greatly. waiting for book 3. going to be great!

I really really don't think its YA if you put it together.

The present is interesting, I think this is the selling point of the first two. He is recalling his history from his point of view and you have to keep that in mind. I also like the fact that Kvothe has all this stuff occur to him and I enjoy how you really are invested and watch one single character grow so so much from how he is telling it.

Then you are faced with his description of how he currently feels about what occurred..

Major part of the first book was very YA, but the second book changed it. The odd thing about these books is that if you look at them in isolation, or even the elements like plot, narration, character, they are not that stand out. Good, but not stand out. But if you put them together, you get something brilliant.

I don't think many are holding on to any ideas that he's a hero Nico, its fairly obvious the world is going to fuck and Kvothe played a major part in that

ok good at comic-con I talked about this to folks and they did not understand this concept. Major might not be quite the gravity of the situation../wink

Just finished the Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes; it was good. Can't say I necessarily liked listening to the POV of a serial killer but it ended up being a pretty damn good listen overall. About halfway through Endymion. Not as good as I remember it being but still it passes the hours of work.

Think I'm going to listen to the Thousand Names next.

I'm looking forward to reading what you think on that one. I've been curious about Wexler for awhile now but have been trying to cut back on how many books I buy. If you get hooked I'll likely spend a credit on it soon.
I'm currently listening to Perdido Street Station. As fantastic as this book was to read, it's even better to listen to. The narrator (John Lee) is fantastic and absolutely nails the voice for Yagharek. Oh, and in other news... S. Moths are still terrifying.
