the Seguleh knelt to the Tyrant. I totally thought they were remnants of an uber warrior race that rose to get rid of the Tyrants! quite disappointing. However, now Traveller is back on the scene and Kruppe is beginning to make an appearance again, and Torvald has gone up to the Moranth, I am getting more interested again!

I caught a cold and this was as good an excuse as any to stay in bed today and read and I have to say I am enjoying the hell out of Wicked. I'm past the dreaded mid-section that's supposed to be dragging a bit and so far have not noticed anything of the sort. The rather obvious, most likely on purpose obvious, allusions to real-world religion and politics are fun, because they are well integrated into the land of Oz. The characters are believably over-the-top. In short, me likey.

Quit listening to Steelheart with only a couple hours remaining. Sanderson's humor is just not for me. Cody was just ridiculous and David's metaphors were absurd. I know it was YA but still it seemed immature even targeted as such. Started the Dirty Streets of Heaven and 2 hrs in and I can say this is definitely more my style. It's actually made me laugh out loud and I rarely do that.

Steelheart was the first Sanderson book that I found funny. I loved how David made ridiculous metaphors (or similies, really).

re STEELHEART i suspect that not being able to skim, ie audiobook instead of text/paper/screen would nudge a few elements of the story, notably metaphors, teen angst and some of the villain names, from amusing to annoying.

I listened to it on audio. I rolled my eyes at some of the stuff he said but I thought he was purposefully making him kind of dorky so I didn't mind.

Cody annoyed me more than anything. Some of his stuff was just ridiculous. I think I quit when he said something like...."challenge Steelheart? I thought you meant something really dangerous like trying to take one of Tia's sodas." That, to me, is stupid. His Scottish/Australian/Southern stuff was annoying but humor like that quote is just too much. Anyhoo, a lot of people liked it, just not my thing. To each their own.

I haven't read Steelheart, but Sanderson in general reads like he's trying to emulate Eddings' humour, except not very well*.



*to make things clear, I have always found David Eddings quite witty for all his other flaws.

Finished Lehane's The Given Day. Brilliant book, some of the best dialogue I've read in ages. Then I tried to read Grunts by Mary Gentle but didn't get more than 50 or 60 pages in because it just wasn't doing anything for me - nothing specific that I can put my finger on, but I couldn't summon any interest in it. Might go back to it at some point in the future and try again.

Now reading Morgan's Altered Carbon - it'd been on my wishlist forever.

Finished An Ill Fate Marshalling by Glen Cook, the 7th book in his Dread Empire series. I thought it was great. In fact I think the Dread Empire series stands right up there with The Black Company and Instrumentalities. I'm already about 25% into the last book - A Path to Coldness of Heart - and it is not disappointing. Cook is firmly planted at the top of my favorite authors list. And for those who are into the Instrumentalities series the next book will be out next month.

I've been trying to finish (audiobook) the 1st book of the Sanderson series of a character named Alcatraz, which is full of good concepts of magic, but less than awesome somehow. If anyone is struggling with the Steelheart quality, stay far away from this Alcatraz series.


I've been working through a free ebook called Elseerian that was intro'd in the free eBook thread that is moderate. The fight/action scenes are pretty good, the overall plot is still kind of ??? - orphan boy with exceptional skill seeks out truth re: parents etc. in a cruel world

I really need to start a re-read of TCG. I think that's where it's at, right now. All the less-than-stellar material is just wearing on me. If I only had it in an electronic format...
