I've read such a huge pile of books since last I posted here, but I think Pale Fire by Nabokov stands out as my best experience so far this year. I ordered it following my usual cyber stalking of SM, and as always it turned out a brilliant choice.

Nabokov is hilarious, and his characters so brilliantly awfull you just can't help but laugh. Not to mention that his prose is beautiful. Having finished the book I went on to order Lolita, which was also fantastic, though in quite a different way. There is humour in Lolita too, quite a lot I'd say, but it's a different and more subtle kind I think.

Pale Fire is such a good book. Nabokov is probably my favourite prose author, and the book is so cleverly written. I loved the fact that you could read it how you wanted as well. You could read the poem first, you could read it last or you could read it as you read the narrative, and your perspective of the story would change as a result.

Right now I'm in the middle of reading Pnin actually, but I've been reading it alongside King of Thorns.

Just finished Jeff Somers' Trickster and I really enjoyed his take on urban fantasy! He's as edgy and in-your-face as in the Avery Cates books, so it bodes well for the rest of the series!

Check out the Hotlist for the full review. . . :D

Since my last visit, I've read L.E. Modesitt Jr's first imager trilogy of IMAGER, IMAGER'S CHALLENGE, AND IMAGER'S INTRIGUE. I enjoyed the series, but the day to day descriptions got a little tedious by the last book, and how the main character acted was completely predictable outside of book 1 (do something new, relate it to character X, then Y, then take action, repeat).

I also read Pratchett's GUARDS, GUARDS, and MEN AT ARMS. I'm not sure how I feel about my first Pratchett experience, some parts were really funny, other were just silly (not in the laugh way). His style was definitely growing on me by the end of MEN AT ARMS though. I'll be checking out other books by him in the future.

I'm currently reading NIGHT OF WOLVES by David Dalglish. He's an indie author who had two series picked up by Orbit, and another one by some new publisher affiliated with Amazon. With that kind of interest, I figured it was worth a look, and his first book in each series is free on Kindle. Only a few chapters in, so we'll see.

The map of Florida. The only Pratchett I've read is a short story in the Legends compilations, so I'm not super familiar with him either.

Finished a Game of Thrones last Monday, really liked it.

Started a Clash of Kings on Tuesday, got hooked from page one.

I've never read a Practchett book. What are they just funny fantasy? I looked at a map in one a few yrs ago and it looked like a map of Florida.

It seems like at the start it's just funny fantasy, that is making fun of all the tropes, but then it develops into an actual story (while till being funny). Some of the dialogue/events were a little over the top for me, as I generally prefer my fantasy more serious, but I can appreciate what Pratchett is doing.

Wert has a nice review thread Here.

The Discworld is round. Florida... isn't. Are you sure it was Pratchett's book map that you saw?

Not to mention, I don't think any of Pratchett's books have maps in them, do they? He does have a separate discworld map, and an Ankh-Morpork map, out, but I can't think of any of the novels themselves that have maps in them.

And no, they're so much more than just 'funny fantasy'. The early ones do hew fairly close to just being parody, but he very much grows into being a quality satirist with a great grasp on plot and character. Do read his stuff...

If it was Pratchett it must have been the final book of the Bromeliad trilogy, Wings, coz that takes place in Florida, but I don't recall it having a map in the version I read.

I'm getting through my great Dresden Re-read, and have just finished 'Turn Coat'. It's been really good to read these one after another, without any other books in between, or a wait for the next one. When I read 'Cold Days' I was always thinking that there was some stuff I'd forgotten... it's so much better a second time around when a lot of the little things make more sense.
I still really like the whole Lasciel affair, and rereading all the early stuff with Mab and Demonreach that has an impact later on.

Anyway... 'Changes' next..
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Yep from what I saw of it it was Florida with quirky names for cities and places. What book or if it was even a disc world I have no clue it was yrs ago last I saw it.

I think you are thinking of Terry Brooks' MAGIC KINGDOM FOR SALE, and its sequels. I only read the first one, but it took place in a place shaped like Florida, and the author is named Terry...

I'm pretty sure Landover is shaped like a circle surrounded by mountains, I don't remember it being shaped like Florida at all.

I've done some researched, and I think it's Piers Anthony's Xanth that looks like Florida.

Yup, you are absolutely correct, though I don't remember seeing any maps. I had googled my choice and saw Florida in the results, but looking at it again, it was talking about Disney's Magic Kingdom... Haha
