Finished "The Ragged Man", Twilight Reign book 4. Lloyd's come a long way from someone who annoyed me to no end when I first read the second volume. The shift of emphasis from his Mary-Sue protagonist may have added to that, but the plot's also gotten a lot better. And the battle at the end was enormously epic.

I'm actually eager for the last volume to come out in MMPB now, because I want to see how this ends.

The Dervish House by Ian McDonald is flat out gorgeous to read. It's a bit of a mood read, so getting into it may be difficult, but it might be the most well written book I've read since Gene Wolfe was good. I'm only a third of the way through and already I think it deserves every award it got and more.

I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I read Scalzi's "Old Man's War," "The Ghost Brigades," and "The Last Colony" over the last few days. The first book was definitely the best but overall a good story and an interesting idea for the future of humanity.

Just started Kay's "Tigana", I've heard nothing but good things about this one so I'm hoping it lives up to the hype.

Tigana divides a lot of people on this forum though, so don't get too swept up by the hype.

70 pages into Before They Are Hanged.. good so far. The most obvious strength of this book right off the bat is that there aren't entire chapters dedicated to Jezal. MODGOD EDIT. YOU KNOW WHY.

Anyone else find Glokta to be eerily similar to the imp from ASOIAF?

I think so. I grabbed HAMMERED and TRAPPED at a 2HS recently and i'll keep an eye open for TRICKED. They ARE fun.

That said i was just gifted Scalzi's REDSHIRTS so depending on when AMOL gets here, that's next up.

Tigana is not Kay's best work, but it is still better then the average. So enjoy and remeber to read the Sarantium tapestry.

As fo myself I'm giving Before they are hanged a try. Maybe about 50-60 pages out, but I can't remember why I didn't like the first book, but this looks promising.

Just finishing up The Great Hunt. This book was a significant improvement over the first; it had a lot more direction, moved from point to point much quicker, and continued to expand and introduce more about the world of The Wheel of Time. The characterization was also more solid in this one as well. My biggest complaint was that it took too long to get started - the first part of the book was spent doing absolutely nothing before the plot got underway.

Will be starting The Dragon Reborn tomorrow.

I read Eye of the World a year or so ago and thought it was pretty good... not sure when I'll get around to reading the next one. Probably after I finish DoD/TCG/OST.

Glad to hear it gets better. I'm expecting to really like WoT

BTW anyone have the Gollancz hardcovers of Abercrombie's stuff? How's the quality? I saw the Orbit version of Red Country in the store and the cover (jacket) seemed really cheap and plasticy.. not nice at all.

I'm thinking that since I'm liking these books so much, might as well just get the harcovers instead of the paperbacks. Partly because the Gollancz versions look fuckin cool as well.
