huh, had a free-ish day today, so Skinner is done. Asher is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. this is definitely my new answer tot he question "man, what can I read now that won't pale in comparison to the epicness of a Malaz re-read"?

now, the problem is i seem to have a recollection of buying Voyage and Orbus. If I did, they are back home.

so, i'll wait the 1.5 weeks untill I go home for reading week to ascertain.

in the meanwhile--I'm moving on to the third "Psalms of isaac" book by Ken Scholes--Antiphon.

ENCHANTER'S END GAME (Belgariad #5).

I am really enjoying my trip through fantasy classics.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I polished off MOON OVER SOHO last night...it was good, but I found I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first book...this one was just too many "Jazz" references for my liking. We get it, you like Jazz, there is no need for whole paragraphs discussing various master's of the style in a UF book (even if the plot involves Jazz). Other than that it was good, but I think I'd pick Mike Carey's Castor series any day over Aaronovitch's books (for good British-based Urban Fantasy). Still, I'll read the 3rd book when it comes out.

Now I needed something to read in between my ABSOLUTE SANDMAN Vol. II (homebound reading only due to mammoth size) reading (and while I await the next 4 trades of Mark Waid's IRREDEEMABLE) so I am onto YENDI by Steven Brust, which is fully hitting the spot. Nothing like a little Vlad Taltos as lite reading.

I wasn't put off by the jazz elements. i didn't think he overdid it and it was usually in the context of something paranormal going on. I did think Aaronovitch did a nice job buildling his world and magic system in this book, getting beyond the basics into some genuinely original places. I also thought his action scenes were better.

But i agree Carey is better on the balance. Darker and less action yet he manages to make the story more involving.

Still reading OST. Loving it.

Finished Stover's Test of Metal. Fantastic, even if I didn't "get it" at the end. Lots of double-, triple-, and quadruple-crossing. Good stuff. I kinda want to read more about Tezzeret now, even though I just know any other non-Stover M:tG book I read will be a total disappointment.

I've read a few of the others as well and if you're going for just the planeswalker novels, they aren't actually too bad. The first one is Agents of Artifice written by Ari Marmell and is mostly from Jace's pov. Since you liked Test, you should really check it out.

Are those MtG books kinda like Dragonlance?

Depends on how you mean that. It's a bunch of different authors that get commissioned to write a single book for the series. These tend to be either a planeswalker novel or a block novel. Planeswalker novels revolve around particular characters that are able to pretty much dimension hop and imho are much better written and more story driven. The block novels play back to the years release of a set for the game, telling the story of a single plane. Personally I'd compare them to the star wars novels.

In other news, I just finished Leviathan Wakes. Holy crap. I have no words for this epicness. My thanks to the board for the heavy recommendations.

Finally, I'm starting Way of the Wolf - the first of the vampire Earth books. Got it after seeing the recommendation from JLV.

While I'm waiting for A Shadow in Summer from the library, I'm reading Dead Beat. I'm switching back and forth between that and City of Saints and Madmen which is pretty good. The first story was decent but Vandermeer's prose is such that he could be writing about a walk through the city and I'd enjoy it. I'm reading Viriconium as my bedside book and 40 pages in and I'm really enjoying it.

The Martian Ambassador by Alan K. Baker. First few chapters in. Quite enjoyin this steampunk stuff! Just finished Alan Moore's Neonomicon. Woah!!! Alan Moore takes the Cthulhu Mythos and takes it in a completely new direction. That's an interpretation of R'lyeh under the waters I'd never of thought off. The man's a genius.

Hyperion, by Dan Simmons.

Also, to kill some time on easy readage and to get some value for money out of them by re-read, The King's Peace and the follow-up The King's Name by Jo Walton. They're not exactly stellar in prose and proceedings and not up to Bernard Cornwell's standards of "historical fantasy" (although I really hate what Cornwell did to Lancelot - you don't mess with legends like that), they are really decent enough to spend some time on a rainy afternoon with.

Having only be able to acquire Finch, I really agree on how awesome Vandermeer is.

I'm also reading OST right now, and I am enjoying it though it's not ranking among my favorites as of yet. I do have a little less than a third to go, however, so we'll see! I'm also reading "The Sisters Brothers" on my Kindle and I am liking it very much, considering I don't normally read Westerns.

I actually found both Finch and Shriek: An Afterword at my local book store for a couple bucks each. I've already read Veniss Underground and though I find Vandermeer a little on the gory side sometimes, I do love his prose. And he really has an incredible imagination.

Putting my read of Wheel of Time on hold now that my copy of OST arrived.

Amp: is Kovacs in the 2 fantasy books? The most I know is that the are set in Kovacs uni and Ive been curios about that.

Obliquely.

The books are kind of a mostly fantasy universe but with some hard sci-fi underpinnings.

'dedicated thread' in the Otherlit forum - linky but note there are full blown, not blocked, balls out for glory SPOILERS there.
I'd suggest avoiding until you're thru the book.
