Parker's an interesting one, isn't she? Technical skill, impressive knowledge and attention to detail. Able to create great characters - was particularly impressed with Duke Valens. Yet in the end, her trilogies grind you down with misery, disappointment, death, all round negativity.

Since people are asking about Retribution Falls, I'm just gonna copypaste my hyping of Wooding's Tales of the Ketty Jay from another forum (I just recently read the second one, Black Lung Captain).

Reading the Wizard's First Rule by Goodkind, has anyone read it and is it part of a series? I am

up to the part were he is being tortured by the Mord-Sith

and I am really enjoying it. It's an easy read and does have a Ta'veren type of feel to it, it's like each step is pre ordained. I'm enjoying it though for what its worth.

I've just read through that thread ^ and oh boy, people really do hate his series. Maybe i'll just leave it after reading this one, I read the scene with Richard cutting down an unarmed civilian and it didn't resonate well. I'll finish Wizard's First Rule and then that's it.

Wasn't trying to discourage you, just wanting to let you know that Goodkind has ehm, some difficulty in convincing people here that he's a good read and that your statement of enjoying the book would get you responses

Did you read that chicken paragraph? It's like he wrote the first book and then his imagination failed him, that whole paragraph is so bad. Maybe i'll read the second one, but so far I have not spent my own money on him. Like I said it was a gift, and before I move on to his next book I have 3 books to read. Blood Rites, The First one in the Darl Tower Series, Gunslinger and another one I can't think of the title at the moment. Maybe once they have been read I might get another Goodkind, but not until The Dresden Series is finished.

Actually, the real problem with Goodkind is not the beginning of the series... I read six, seven if you count Debt of Bones... so i'm comfortably informed in my opinion... the first three or so books are decent fantasy with some odd turns (the whole Mord Sith thing...) and a few fairly clever ideas (Confessors, Gars, the Sylph, the whole Mord Sith thing...find me one other instance of magic sucking dominatrix ninja bisexual chicks in all of fantasy lit...) ... and yes, he totally rips some ideas off other authors but hey, it's not like Robert Jordan was the first person to write about an order of good White witches who are manipulative and secretive and are opposed by the Black witch opposites... but somewhere around book 4 or so Goodkind's socio-political views start appearing and then things get weird and weirder and bad and badder the whole series starts spiralling downwards... and that's where the eye bleeding starts. To say nothing about the Chicken.

And yet virtually every one of his books has made all kinds of top bestseller lists.

All of which is to say Tattersail you can read on and make up your own mind. AFTER you finish the Dresden books.

And keep lots of tissue handy because Goodkind makes your eyes bleed.

This first book has more to like than dislike, nothing wrong with the reading so far but I don't want to spoil it. Like someone mentioned with the heroes series, I enjoyed the first 2 seasons of heroes but I haven't watched onwards because people have said it sucked and made them feel shitty about the previous series. It doesn't give a series an exciting start with enough negativity. That being said, i'd give the second book a shot as I enjoyed this book!

Good. Brings back the general happy feelings I had while watching the show, but it has enough differences that I didn't just put it down to actually watch Firefly.

On the other hand I finally got around to picking up Dark Lady's Chosen. I'd read the first three books early 2010 and just had way too much good stuff on my plate to get back to this. Now that I'm here, I'm finding that I don't care enough about the story anymore to bother trying to make it through the bad writing. Oh well.

Haha, I could go get the book but I told myself not to since Skyrim is coming out Fri. I ll be buying the game plus the 650pg guide so I need to save a little $. Plus Assassins Creed III comes out on the 15th and thats another must have on release day as they are including the OG AC when you buy III!!!

Technically it's not ASSASSINS CREED III, it's ASSASSINS CREED II-3.

But yeah Skyrim is a good reason. I can't wait to play that game.

About 100 pages into ALLOY and so far Allomancy + guns + steampunky era = good stuff.

EDIT: Here is the info about next years ASSASSIN'S CREED III:

So earlier today UbiSoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that a new Assassins Creed game will be coming in 2012. This title is supposedly a "Major" title and will end Desmonds story.

Talking about the release date Yves says "There will be another great, full-fledged Assassin's Creed title next year," and "It will be another major release and we will be communicating more about it in the coming months." Who knows when we will see the first trailer but Yves has leaked some details of Desmonds next adventure, it will be his last.

"In Assassin's Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012. That's fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point,"Pointing to the end of Desmond "Assassin's Creed is all about cycles - we have the Ezio cycle and the Altair cycle, and both of those are set to conclude in Revelations and we have the Desmond cycle, which is set to end on December 2012."

This also hints that the game might launch in December 2012 to meet this story ending. It wouldn't make as much sense to launch the game in November. I haven't really played through the Assassins Creed series but this game will no doubt be the climactic game everybody has been waiting for. It will be interesting to see where UbiSoft takes the Assassins Creed franchise once Desmond is gone.

I am reading, or just started reading The Black Prism by Brent Weeks. My initial thought are that I like the magical system so far, I am not too sure on the character names but it has started well with a few different perspectives.

It's a good book. The magic system is pretty much like Green Lantern ring constructs. The characters are cool...except Kip, he's bloody annoying and has no spine.
