Currently reading Good Luck, Yukikaze by Chohei Kambayashi

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell

Reading Terry Brooks latest offering THE MEASURE OF THE MAGIC which will end the first duology about the prehistory of Shannara. My worries about the new main character have been relieved as he ssems to have become more badass.

Still reading ASOS.

Finished Elfstones of Shannara. It was hard to read it without a jaded eye, since I've read so much more sophisticated takes on fantasy. But aside from IMO pretty flat characters and a romance subplot that looked written by George Lucas, it was good. I had a hankering for 80s fantasy, and I got it. I think I'm willing to go on to Wishsong eventually.

Now on to Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

ROBOPOCALYPSE.... i know it's unfair to compare this to WORLD WAR Z, but halfway thru i can't help myself, and it's just not as good. Decent enough, but, well, meh.

Let me know how VORTEX is, I was disappointed with ALLIES and hoped Denning to amp it back up.

VORTEX is much better than ALLIES but the series is starting to lag with the different authors and trying to make the entire series flow together with their own styles. Golden is really a terrible author and I'm not looking forward to her next entry in the series.

Denning is the saving grace of this current series...Vortex is good. Shit I gotta try to find Ascension soon.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying Vortex so far. Halfway in now, and Conviction is waiting for me at the library.

Sadly I hear that ASCENSION (book 8) is pretty standardly bad.

That wouldnt really surprise me. I doubt very much that Golden will be offered to write anymore Star Wars Lit.

That said, I think the fans know that Denning usually delivers. So since he is finishing the series we should be good.

I'd be lying if I wasn't decidedly curious about the next series they are talking about previewing in APOCALYPSE.

Well, Invincible was easily the worst book in LotF. That said, both of his FotJ books have been series highlights.

And for the record, I really enjoyed Golden's Omen, though Allies was admittedly pretty mediocre.

Brooks latest isn't grabbing me right now so I dropped it back into the TBR pile and am continuing on my re-read of GOTM, which I only have about 200 pages left in.

Also @Quick...I think Brooks sux imo. Ive read 3 of his books and had to struggle to finish 2 of them. I did enjoy First King(the prequel). I hated Sword and Elfstones. I threw away all of his books I had after sep from my wife that I had gotten from the SFBC(I had all of the Shannara at the time) lol. How many of his books have you read?

I've read First King (great), and the 4 Scions Of Shannara books (good, but not great), and the entire Word & Void series (his best stuff IMHO), and the Genesis of Shannara and now Legends as well.

I tried to read SWORD OF SHANNARA a few years back and flat out hated it.

His Word and Void series though is excellent.

I will admit that I dug Omen with all the Sith story in it. I did not like the final pg count though. 200something pgcount for a HC price was fucked up. Ofcourse they knew we would buy it no matter what for us collecters but it was shitty of them do so.

Heh. Well, I got the first 4 FotJ books for a total of $1 as part of my initial SFBC membership, so price doesn't really come into play for me. :ice: Plus, the rest of them I've just been borrowing from the library.

Just finished reading 'Side Jobs.'

More Dresden? Yup.

Shorter, more compact stories with details and POV's from other characters? Hell yes.

Nice details without a count-down to some major apocalypse? Yeeehaaah.

Loved it, all of them.

More please Mr dealer Butcher.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I have read Sword, Elfstones and Wishsongs of Shannara last year and when my Dad's uncle heard that I was reading them he told me that he had the remaining books for me if I wanted. My answer: Thanks for the offer, but after three books,I have read enough from Terry Brooks.
It's ok, but not mind blowing. Think I have read a graphics novel from Shannara earlier this year though, gotta check my bookshelf.

Edit, can't find it, did find a graphics novel from the Hobbit where I completely forgot about, might read it tomorrow.

On topic, finishing up Return of the Crimson Guard, Toll the Hounds will be next.

The first time I read TtH, the Kruppe all knowing narrative bugged me, on my first re read it didn't bother me and now I'm actually looking forward to it.

Now reading Alastair Reynolds' Chasm City. I read Revelation Space several years ago and remember finding it hard work, but I am absolutely loving this one so far.
