I, for one, am probably going to read GS before i read ADwD.

Uhhh...yeah!!!

Indeed. As GS will likely take me a day to read and ADWD will take...significantly longer.

Halfway through The Worm Ouroboros and I needed to take a break, so I read a couple of old L. Ron Hubbard pulp sci-fi stories, "Greed" and "Final Enemy". Pretty forgettable stuff. As for Worm, it's a bit of a slog. I can tell it'll be one of those books that I'll be glad I read, it's just going to take some work to get through.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

That's like having dessert before the main meal!

That's like having a deep fried high calorie appetiser stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon before the main meal!

Man I am mightily struggling to finish off The Last Argument of Kings. I liked the first book and really enjoyed the second but this one is just not doing it for me. Normally the last 100-200 pages of a book I tear into but this one is just dragging on and I not sure exactly what it is other than it's just not making me want to finish it. Down to my last 30-40 pages so hopefully will get it done soon and move on to other things.

Just finished White Night. Awesome book! I'll probably wait until after A Dance with Dragons to read Small Favor, and in the mean time I'll finish up Furies of Calderon and maybe finally start Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson.

Yeah, it's a tough one. I kind of feel one of the things that makes Abercrombie special (fantasy tropes on their heads ect.) is also one of the things that can make him a tougher read. The end of tLAoK is totally one of those books I look back on and think..."well that's interesting"...but not "Man, that was a kickass ending!"

Not used to seeing Powell's run out of books. I mean the damn place is a full city block. The sci-fi/fantasy room is as big as most borders I've been in.

I want to be where you are.

Continuing my run of light and fluffy while waiting for GHOST STORY and DwD, I just started BLOOD OATH by Christopher Farnsworth. I knew precisely nothing more than the cover blurb about this book that i picked up for a dollar somewhere... in a nutshell, 'the President's pet vampire must stop yaddayaddayadda' .

I am spoiling nothing at all by telling you that in the first ten pages the vamp rips a pack of werewolves to bloody shreds with a ka-bar knife. In the first 25 pages the author name drops Cthulu, mongolian death worms, the Crystal Skull and possibly THE MUMMY films.

I'm in... i'm SO in...

The second book, The President's Vampire, is pretty good too.

Put it this way... in terms of sheer sf/f action thriller fun, 25 pages in this is reminding me a lot of Lee's THE BREACH in an entirely good way.

FFS, Cthulu AND mongolian death worms...!

Blast and damn your eyes! I swore I was done with vampire books!

...and I'm going to the damned bookstore tonight to get the new Rollins....where it appears they just so happen to have two copies of BLOOD OATH (yeah, I looked that up....What?)...

...fuck.

I'm not made of stone Abyss! I'm made of weakness and awesome lovecraftian bacons.

It's not the vampire element that drew me in, far from it, i was just standing in line and it was the only thing on hand to flip thru... but in the first few pages the author's sheer irreverance jumps out and he's clearly got geek cred and he's clearly not taking himself or the story too seriously and it just works.

Well, having finished James Rollins latest Sigma book (Abyss, see the main Rollins thread for info) THE dEVIL COLONY last night, I put all else aside to finally start my Great Malazan Re-read, and I'm about 100 pages into GotM....and MAN why didn't I see half this stuff?! LOL. I guess having read all ten books really gives you insight, but everything is much more loaded, the pre chapter stuff, hell, even Paran and Tavore's quick little convo in their house in Unta is totally loaded, up to and including Felisin even though she's not even in the scene. Mind=boggled. I'm in for a much richer read with he series on a second full re-read aren't I?

Just wait 'til your THIRD reread!!!

I have a problem.

Back over in Farnworth's BLOOD OATH, i am totally enjoying this book and feel obliged to share this snippet if only to convince others to check it out... no real spoilers other than the dialogue itself...

"Why didn't you just charm or hypnotize her or something?"
"What do you mean?"
"Aren't vampires supposed to be like sex gods?"
"Where did you get that idea?"
"Ummm... late night tv I guess."
"You're food to us. Would you have sex with a cow?"
