Currently rereading The Orffyreus Wheel by David Niall Wilson - a great two part tale based on Johann Bessler's work at creating a Perpetual Motion machine...lots of intrigue both in the present and flashing back to the 1700s and some nutty bad guys.

y'ou know, at the risk of sounding heretical, when i've read teh dresdencrack 1-9 all in one go (about 2 months it took me), I really felt Death maskswas the best of the bunch.

not trying to discourage anyone, because dead beat was also great, but I wanted it be known that i'ts not universally hailed as the best. Ofc, if I ever get around to full re-read, my opinion may change.

oh, and Sarantine Mosaic is Kay's best work by far. though Under heaven's up there as well.
Tigana was underwhelming

This, although I did like Tigana.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: In my opinion, GGK is a mediocre writer at best. He's akin to a lesser version of Michael Crichton of fantasy.

Finished A Song For Arbonne. Loved it. For a mediocre writer I think he's bloody brilliant :apt2:

Can't decide what to read next. It's either Hyperion, American Gods, or a re-read of A Storm of Swords.

About 2/3 through Fool Moon. Not a lot better in terms of writing, but I like the plot better than Storm Front.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I know it will be said to you many times, but the first 2 books in Dresden are basically decent intro's to the overall story, but nothing spectacular. Book 3 (Grave Peril) really opens things up by introducing more important characters, and setting up some great long story arcs. Then book 4 (Summer Knight) comes alongs, gives you more of the Faerie realm and their machinations, and it all starts to go nuts (in a good way).

The writing improves significantly as the series progresses, and the plots are far more layered and interesting (at least relative to the first 2).

If you even barely enjoying it thus far, I'm sure you'll love it from book 3 on.

I am struggling with waiting for the latest book. Frustrating.

Starting storm front. I can't quite shake the feeling that jumping into the drescrack a month before ADwD just MIGHT be a mistake...

Finished up BAUCHELAIN and KORBAL BROACH. Loved both BLOOD FOLLOWS and THE LEES OF LAUGHTER'S END (my personal fave), and thought THE hEALTHY DEAD was just okay, didn't love it.

Moved on now to LEVIATHAN WAKES by James S.A. Corey, and also doing my re-read of A STORM Of SWORDS.

Hardly heretical. DM was my favourite until i read DB and i still think DM's finale is blood brilliant and one of the most cinematically writte action scenes i have ever read.

Even worse, GHOST STORY comes out like a week later.

I, for one, am probably going to read GS before i read ADwD.

Still making my way thru Rollins' BLACK ORDER. Not loving this as much as MAP OF BONES, but still good commando scientist fun.

Just finished Storm Front. Went to my book store today and was pissed cause they were out of Fool Moon. Not used to seeing Powell's run out of books. I mean the damn place is a full city block. The sci-fi/fantasy room is as big as most borders I've been in. Guess I'll just have to order it online.

In the meantime I'm starting The Purifying Fire by Laura Resnick. Yes, I really am reading those Magic: The Gathering novels. Yes, they're still better then Douglass and Badkind. I started them up after I spotted that the one that was published last year was actually written by Matthew Woodring Stover. I think I'm curious to see how his non-Caine works turn out.

Started The City and The City by Mieville yesterday. About 70 pages in and it's very gripping so far.
After Kraken, which was great, that's my second book from that author. But I really seem to acquire a taste for his writing.

Yeah, BLACK ORDER is decent, but is probably the weakest of the Sigma series just because its plot isn't QUITE as interesting as the other volumes. It's the one I read first actually, before I found MoB. As long as you read THE JUDAS STRAIN next, as he ramps back up the awesome in that one (MAP OF BONES is my fave, followed very closely by THE JUDAS STRAIN and THE DOOMSDAY KEY), and the rest of them are pretty damn great.

Finished Before they are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie. It was much better than The Blade Itself, I thought it was good, not great. He's a decent writer, I just thought it fell a little short.
