I get what it's doing (a little heavy handedly at times) but was never a trekkie so I'd say some of it slips over my head.

Just finished Africa Risen, the third anthology of speculative fiction from Africa and the African Diaspora. Though good, there is too much filler for my taste in this one. The first two, Dominion and The Year's Best African Speculative Fiction (2021), were much better reads.

Finished Schwab's A Darker Shade of Magic on earbook. I might move on to some non-fiction audiobooks. I usually struggle to read non-fiction in treebook, and end up bored or distracted. Since I'm usually doing something else while listening to audiobooks anyway AND enjoy non-fiction podcasts, I'll give it a go.

Almost done with Lyons' The Name of All Things.

I've been on a bit of a non-fiction audiobook kick myself lately. I tend to lean towards true crime but I've got a biography of Caesar Augustus by Adrian Goldsworthy (the one that wrote the Vindolanda trilogy) lined up soon.

Let me know what you settle on cause I'm looking for more interesting non-fiction.

Got out of the reading lull by abandoning all thoughts of books I should read and pick something at random that I hadn't intended to read right now or at least not until it was cheaper to do so

Gone through Among the Dead Men the latest book in Craig Shaeffers huge interconnected urban fantasy universe, easily one of the most entertaining so far with a visit to hell which was visceral and fun. Seeing a few historical celebrities in hell was a treat and handled rather interestingly. Clearly working up towards the "end" of the series as well with some nice revelations, that have been foreshadowed but easily ignored previously.

Also about a third into Age of Ash from Daniel Abraham which I think is very nice so far, low key. Similar in writing to Dagger and Coin I'd say but focusing on shadowy activity and street crime so far, very successful in building up even minor characters which does take a lot of space but gives a very living city around the main characters.

Finally finished Gemma Files' A Rope of Thorns; that it took 4 months is entirely my fault, and nothing to do with the book itself, which is fantastic. That's two down in the Hexslinger series, one (plus a couple of short stories) left to go.

So, Just Finished... It's a brilliant book. If you enjoyed THE CITY WE BECAME you NEED to read this.
If you have not read THE CITY you should read that and then this because the two together are just brilliant.
Wonderful characters incredibly human and exceptional all at once. The world and the 'magic' are novel and fun to read.
The action is just wild.
The finale is... well, see above.

Earbook narrator is flawless, brilliant even.

I'll give it some thought but this probably went straight to my #1 read for the year.

Worth your money, your time, and your attention.

Wholly unconnected to anything she's written before. You're good to start with THE CITY.

If you've never been to NYC, or watched anything set there, you may have to just roll with some things at the start. Don't be offput, everything is explained.

Finished up Age of Ash, which was excellent in the aspects of world building and characters but actually fairly boring. Not sure how the next book will be all that much better since the stakes are so small so personal that for most people who lives in the city where the action takes place a surprise succession from one king to another and an old temple burning down is all that is noticable and neither does seem to impact anyone not directly involved. Well written but boring is the verdict.

Started up Three Axes to Fall, the Grave of Empires has been excellent entertainment and some of my favorite reads of the last years and had no clue this was out so looking forward to this one.

Finished up my 8th Aubrey & Maturin (Patrick O'Brian) Adventure THE IONIAN MISSION, and it was excellent. Probably my second fave of the 8 I've read after HMS SURPRISE. Lots of great content.
