Finished "scar night" for the book club...
Pretty good, although i'm not big on the technical side of things, had trouble visualizing certain aspects of it...

Now, finally, onto my Glen Cook's "Chronicles of the Black Company" omnibus....

I'm reading Coe's first novel in the Forelands saga, not bad so far...

Im having trouble getting into Scar Night, Its not a bad book and Im about 150 pages into but Its hard for me to build motivation to finish it...

but I guess I must for the BOOK CLUB

Now I've just started 'Ash' by Mary Gentle. This looks like its going to be great fun... its humongous!

Finished "Gates of Fire" by Stephen PRessfield today. A fantastic book, and I hear they are going to make a movie out of it. While I'm sure it will be a great movie, I can already hear tons of people going "This is just a copy of 300!"

I thought that was what The movie 300 and graphic novel were based off?

Just finished Jeffrey Ford's The Shadow Year.

A compelling blend of mystery and speculative fiction, The Shadow Year is a wonderful read. A relatively short work, weighing in at about 300 pages, but a satisfying reading experience nonetheless.

I doubt that younger readers will get as much out of it. Yet if you grew up in the 60s or the 70s, The Shadow Year will bring back fond memories that will make you cherish this novel even more.

I hope not, the book by Pressfield was very good, especially the ending. Although I did enjoy 300 as the fantasy version there is a lot more of a story in 'Gates of Fire'.

Just finished reading David Gemmel's Troy trilogy, Lord of the Silver Bow etc... memorable well thought out characters and really liked how he brought together the ancient history and facets of the Illiad.

I have finished the first Omnibus of Glen Cook's"Black Company" --the books of the North.

I can def. see what here inspired SE. And I loved Cook's rants about the cliche stories--esp. towards the end of "The White Rose"...
Now I have to wait till june untill the publish the second omnibus...

Finished "The Born Queen", last book of Keyes' "Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone"
It was...fairly awesome. Keyes managed to wrap things up nicely, the book had good pace and it built up to a nice conclusion. The problems were few--the final Climactic showdowns (note the plural) were too brief, imho, and towards the end Keyes went soft, and the ending was "too happy" by the standards set in the previous volumes, that resembled ASOIAF a lot. That being said, since this was the end, maybe it was good that it ended like that.

anywhoo, don't have much to read now, can go buy more books on Sat as best bet, so in the meanwhile, I guess I' read the first installment of Perumov's "Swords" cycle...

The "Last Argument of Kings" made a surprise appearance at my door yesterday, right after Amazon.de went through all that trouble to inform me that regrettably they cannot deliver it. Now, if I just weren't so sick as I am at the moment and if my head wasn't hurting so much, I would already have started reading it... I guess it'll have to wait till tomorrow...

Oh god no!! :eek: They're based losely on the same event (the Battle of Thermopolae, clearly), but Gates of Fire has all sorts of things 300 lacked. Interesting characters, believable storyline, historical realism, excellent dialogue, scenes of *shock horror* emotional impact... also no War Rhinos, which some people probably see as a shame;)

I really wanted to start Before they are Hanged next, but I'm not getting my copies back untill about hal;f way through April after I left themin a pub just after the Abercrombie signing so it's a toss up between Ian Macdonald's Brasyl, which just won the BSFA Award, and The Red Wolf Conspiracy by Robert Redick. Probably the latter, because I'm feeling reminiscent for sailing.

Just finished Andrzej Sapkowski's The Last Wish. . .

Disappointing, to tell the truth. Although the main protagonist is interesting, as a whole The Last Wish doesn't rise above most media tie-in fiction out there.
