I am reading HP Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. Oh my god it's longwinded. I get it. The architecture is really weird and the icy mountain looks evil, sheesh. Just get to the tentacly goodness!

I'm 40 pages into an 80 page story and it feels like 400.

Just finished the three musketeers.

Man, this book could have been half the length and lost little of the telling, Maark would love is depressing girth.

Once you get used to the waffling flowery talk as a plot driving narrative you sort of glaze over its annoyance.

It's a slow slow build but a wonderful (if a little sad) ending, I turned the last 100 pages without stirring from the sofa.

That said, the Keither Sutherland film presents a far more palatable take on the tale, because you have Tim Curry hamming it up as Richelieu as only he can, a perfect villainous henchman in Rochefort, 4 charming and gallant Musketeers and a likeable pair of youngsters on the throne.
In the book, you have assholes and image idiots galore. The king is a right royal bastard, Richelieu is disappointing compared to Tim Currys maniacal Gillan and Rochefort is a non entity.
And the 4 Musketeers are reprehensible shits themselves, to say the least.

It says a lot I guess that Dumas was able to make them likeable despite their many foibles and generic ungentlemanly behaviour.

Glad I read it, probably would have liked it more if the Sutherland film didn't hold such a nostalgic place in my heart, it's like the Costner robin hood, I watched it at the right age and loved it, and it's the only version for me.

Not in the slightest Maark, this isn't bloated the way sandy and Jordan can be, it's excessive dialogue the way Erikson can be. A bit more flowery than Erikson's navel gazing but none the less

While I agree with this for the film of that story...the best film version of these CHARACTERS are in 1998’s THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK. Jeremy Irons, Gerard Depardieu, John Malkovich and Gabriel Byrne as the aged versions of them is untouchable for performance.

While I agree with this for the film of that story...the best film version of these CHARACTERS are in 1998's THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK. Jeremy Irons, Gerard Depardieu, John Malkovich and Gabriel Byrne as the aged versions of them is untouchable for performance.

Strong, but not nearly as entertaining. Sutherland, Sheen, and Platt killed it, Curry was an absolute joy of a villain, hell even Chris O'Donnell is watchable. Everyone is so clearly having a blast and it carries to the audience.
