Finished up God's War and Infidel the first two beldame books by Kameron Hurley and found them pretty nice perhaps a bit too harsh but very different sf.

Going with Crowfall next and in the first few pages it seems as good as its two predecessors.

Then I read the first volume of Calvin & Hobbes that's being rereleased in a nice new package. Awh man the nostalgia. This is the pinnacle of litterature and art. I especially like these early strips where Watersons style hadn't quite solidified.

Are you familiar with the strip Frazz? Despite being an obvious homage/sorta-unnoficial-sequel it's not really a replacement for Calvin and Hobbes but it is nonetheless a really fun strip in the same sort of vein.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I wasn't overly enamoured with Good Omens the first time I read it (the 4 extraneous bikers always felt un needed and overly forced) put me very much in a mind of Hitchhikers Guide, I didn't get the hype.
But a reread changed my mind somewhat, I don't know what changed, its still not peak Gaimen or Prachett by any means, but it was a lot more fun the second time round

Crown of Stars is good. I got stuck on Book 6 though because I was trying to use that to break the reading slump that I'm in but couldn't. It's been sat at the same page for like six or seven months now.

Might I recommend Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archives book 1 The Way of Kings?

All killer no filler

You may recommend turgid sloppy horse shit and it'd be a more enjoyable experience to hold

That's essentially the take-off point but it's a billion times better than that makes it sound.

Finished the Earbook of THE POPPY WAR and... I kind of agree with those saying it was a bit poor and the characters weren't great. Spoilers from this point on:

I mean the setting and the world building and indeed pretty much the first half of the book are fantastic! I love the Chinese influence on it and the military academy Rin gets into is ace (I've said it before, for some reason I dig school/training scenarios in fantasy fiction).

However when the first year ends, it goes downhill quite quickly and when she joins the psych she just becomes more whiny and pathetic with each chapter. It gets dark, very dark but by that point I was just so annoyed at her (and at everyone else tbh) that I didn't care. Even when she finally accesses her power she doesn't get better, just reacts to everything very emotionally and then whines about it afterwards.

I feel like RF Kuang has a superb idea and some great stories to tell - the sequel is out next month - but I'm not sure I care enough any more to get the next one. It's a shame because I was loving it at first.

Ah well. Onto the audiobook delights of MEMORY SORROW THORN. :headbang:

I get why not everyone would like it necessarily coz unlikeable characters are always an opinion-splitter but there's no way to get her where she is at the end without putting her through some really dark shit, mentally. Also I feel like 'whiny and pathetic' is rather underselling what she's reacting to.

Yes I understand that but her reaction to just about everything seems to be "but what about meeeee?"

I'm about 200 pages into Terry Pratchett's first Discworld Book "Color of Magic".

This is a surprisingly good book. Maybe that shouldn't be such a surprise to me, given there's like 20 of these books but I sort of had an idea of them being a Monty Python'esque satire of fantasy, more gimmick than actual story. Man, was I wrong.

It is satire but it's so cleverly written the satire just becomes a thoroughly good tale. This is just great fantasy. I had to look up the publication date. This was released in 1983! Yet it's as solid now as it was then. I find it fascinating that Fantasy was already so established in the 80s that you could write this solid a charicature of the genre.

And on top of that the world building and magic system/universe is ridiculously clever. There's a ton of depth in what I've already read yet it's all used so effortlessly that Pratchett's style just feels light of touch.
