If you're referring to how the society refers to itself, via Mycroft, it might help to know when you go back to it that there is a point and payoff to that vibe.

Have you got as far as finding out What Mycroft Did yet? That's when the book (and series) really kicked off for me.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Yes to both. I also found the same things rather annoying until I found out What Mycroft Did (hah, I like that) and understood that most of it is just Mycroft being Mycroft and seeing the world through Mycroft's dramaqueen-y lense. That helped me relax into the style to a degree, and there's definitely a payoff on multiple levels.

I'm still not reading anything because I'm trying to make myself finish the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, although I found out today that Darksoul (sequel to Godblind) has hit the shelves the other week and I am mightily motivated to move on to that because the blurb is promising me interesting things.

I have not yet — they've only hinted at the outlines so far. I hope that it does become less condescending as I continue.

Finished Re:Zero 3-3. Starkly brutal. Love it.

New Game! issue 1 next. After that, not sure. Recommendations? Leaning towards Crown of Stars 6-7 or Arbonne.

Started listening to The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August on the way to work this morning. It's well read and a fascinating concept so far. Thanks to whoever it was that first recommended it!

I finished The Crimson Campaign and immediately bought The Autumn Republic. I really like the Powder Mage trilogy, so far. Can't wait to see how it ends.

Just read and reviewed Peter F. Hamilton's Salvation.

Not as self-contained as it should have been as the first volume in a new series, but a good read nonetheless.

I finished Cold Iron. A good read, despite some frustration in the middle chapters where some bug in the epub made it very slow to turn the pages. Cleared up for the end, thankfully. I enjoyed it being the opposite sort of view from his previous series- rather than being in on the machinations and everything from the top, you're with Aranthur at the bottom looking up and not knowing what exactly is going on. Gives it a whirlwind sort of feel. It also in small but neat ways subverts Mary Sue-ism - at the start there's a definite possibility that he could end up that way but the story ends up using those expectations.

The denouement is a bit odd though- there is a proper finale but the book is so concerned with getting to the end to set up the next one that the actual dramatic climax of this one almost falls by the wayside. Just about holds it together, though.

I've now started re-reading Lord of the Rings for the first time in, I think, fifteen years? I'm kinda amazed how well I remember it. I mean, I did read it several times before that last one but there are books I read a week ago that I remember less well than the opening here.
I'm glad though. I was a little worried that my tastes would have changed and I'd now find Tolkien's prose more dry than I'm used to, but that's not happened at all.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Finished "The Devil you know" . That ended up pretty close to what I'd have expected. The showdown was well enough written, and it'll be interesting to see how Juliet develops. But overall, I'm in no hurry to continue this series. I'll probably wait until there's a sale on the ebooks.

For the next commute read, I think I'll try "The Iron Ship" .

Would that be the Iron Ship by K M McKinley?

yeah, I picked it up on forum reccos but haven't gotten around it yet.

Read it and book 2. Loved the worldbuilding.

Also loving the worldbuilding and I saw Book 3 on a shelf in Chapters last time I was there, which is why this came back on my radar

That was such an amazing reveal I had to put the book down for a while. A great recommendation by you, though I've just read the first two books so far.

I really enjoyed his previous series, so I have high hopes (maybe too high) for this one.

I'm still on hiatus from TLTL. I've got stressors out the wazoo, so am going through more escapist stuff.

Gemmell's The King Beyond The Gate. With a cover like this, can't go wrong.

Wow.... that is old school!

Enjoy - Gemmell is very high on my go-to list of "escapist" when stressed.

Cook's Port of Shadows drops on Tuesday. I have it pre-ordered on Audible, It takes place between the first two BC books. Going to drop what I'm listening to now and do a BC1 reread this weekend. It's been a while since the last Glen Cook novel. I'm hoping a new Garrett book is not far off too.

There isn't even such a thing as the Legend trilogy. But yeah, King Beyond the Gate is the second Rigante book published. And the 10th chronologically.

Just finished Ilona 'yeah, she's only half the writing team' Andrews' MAGIC TRIUMPHS.

Solid ending to the Kate Daniels series, comments in the Kateamine ded-thread.

Next... not sure... i need to listen to the finale a few more times first.
