Finished Philosopher's Flight.
Overall pretty good, could have been better though.

Well I'm midway through something short but just don't feel like carrying on.
Might just read manga for a bit instead.

Still reading Trials of Blood and Fire now on book three which I was a bit doubtful about starting, the fist book was good, the second a bit less so but I'm a completionist 9/10 times. The third one however is awesome, its one of those books which grind down the main characters through endless shit happening. Usually I dislike such books but this one mix it with a few moment of total badassery make for a nice mix also a terrific book for showing the evils of every side and their redeeming qualities or at least belivable justifactions.

Finished Jemisin's Fifth Season couple hours ago. Great novel, intriguing characters. If I had to nitpick one thing, it would be the weak "twists"/"reveals".
Anyway, Fifth Season is probably the best book I've read all year, and I've already started Obelisk Gate. From what I've heard, it only gets better from here. Hype.

Ploughing through THE WAKING FIRE and enjoying it immensely. Since I got the first book hardcover, I was in the store seeing if book 2 was still in hardcover (I like matching books) and it was...but not only that, the third book is already out? I think that might have been shelved at least a week early. For those looking forward to it, have a look at your local shop. I think I may just buy book 2 and 3 since I'm quite loving this first one.

I've seen Anthony Ryan knocking about in my Amazon recos for a long time.
Worth a punt on one? If so which series?

I really liked his first series (Raven's Shadow series), though some people didn't think he stuck the landing in book 3 (I did).
This new series is a bit Victorian steampunk (but not excessively so), a bit western, a bit Indiana Jones, and a healthy dollop of Mistborn (magic system)...and Dragons.
I'd say give it a go. I'm REALLY enjoying it.

Read the 1st book of his 1st trilogy and I really enjoyed it. One day I will buy and finish it.
Hate to say it but I'd stop there. Blood Song is a great book. However book 2 did not hold my interest for the most part, and most people were very disappointed by book 3.

I liked where he took it. I think expecting the whole series to be carried by Valin is an unfair expectation and he did well, especially at expanding the sympathetic character list.

Seconded. I thought the series improved as he expanded the povs.

Currently re-reading Blood Song which is a damn good book, also recommend the audiobook the narrator is perfect for this book.
Most people are rarely worth listening to, quite a few people enjoyed the entire series.

Thirded. Books 2 and 3 really expanded what he was doing, and I was impressed.

I read Yoon Ha-Lee's Revenant Gun. Quality ending to a quality series. It's gotten less hype than the in-some-ways-similar Imperial Radtch trilogy by Ann Leckie, but overall I think it's just as good.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Totally disagree.
I had no problem with the expanding POVs, I actually enjoyed seeing more of the world but what he did with Vaelin was a travesety. He went from fast becoming one of my all time favourite characters to what the hell?! Just give him...
Spoiler
On a positive note, just finished reading Ready Player One and I really enjoyed the book. I liked how it was so different from the film.

Finished part 1 of Ink nowhere close to making up my mind if I like the book or not. Being a summer book, when I usually have other stuff to do, or I come home tired after an evening of sports, my attention definitely lapses a lot, but I'm not sure if I can truly attribute this to the book being difficult, or if it's the "general reading circumstances". Because of that, I hesitate to give an opinion on it, beyond the basic fact that it's all about the post-Evenfall, which is barely mentioned in the end of "Vellum". And this somewhat promotes the sense of a disconnect. Also: SO. MANY. NODS. TO. MOORCOCK. The who;e Harlequin thing is beyond a nod to anyone who read The Cornelius Quartet . Although Duncan certainly goes in more detail, it's impossible to ignore the similarities.
Certainly gonna be one of the longest (in terms of effort required to read it) books of 2018 at this pace.
