Or have you already gone back to it, and looked back at yourself reading it, and then put it down and watched yourself put it down to get a glass of water while you're drinking a glass of water while watching yourself drink the glass of water you got while putting the book down?

What kind of witchery is this? How do you know these things?

Is it bad that I'm frustrated by some of the philosophical shoe gazing and just want to see Achamian drop some gnarly gnostic magic bombs on people?

Nope, this book was pretty high ion the philosonavelgazing, but for what it's worth,

American Elsewhere is his best stand-alone, followed by his debut Mr. Shivers (a horror-fantasy set in Depression era America -- quite good). The Troupe (an ambitious big-supernatural story set in the outskirts of the Vaudeville circuit) is pretty good, but doesn't really hit the nail on the head compared to contemporaries like American Gods and Library at Mount Char. His weakest is The Company Man, a noir-ish detective story set in a fictional retro-industrial American city w/ oddball advanced tech. One of those stories where the city itself should be a character, but it never quite gets there -- would probably work better as a movie, frankly.

Thanks Worry and PG - definitely adding American Elsewhere to the list.

You won't regret it. I blitzed through AE in like 24 hours. Absolutely phenomenal.

I'm reading City of Stairs right now and it's quite good. I'll definitely plan to read American Elsewhere and possibly more of his books after I'm done with the trilogy.

Also glad to see Abyss saying good things about Clines' new book. 14 was compelling as fuck, and I look forward to The Fold and Paradox Bound.

Finished Way of Kings. I forgot how much I loved these books.

Also 50% into Time Traveller's Wife. Despite the bizarreness I am saying aww a lot. It's a cute book.

Also 50% into An Echo of Things to Come. I wish the book would move a bit faster.

Only on pg 30 but Grace of Kings is fun. Very fun actually.

The style either clicks for you or it doesn't. Glad to see it did.

I love that book because it's SO depressing at points, but also SO uplifting. Great story. Unique. Sadly, the book that Niffenegger follows it with is not nearly as unique or good.

Have made it to pg 53 of Grace so I believe I have passed the point PG stopped. I'm in! This book has some umph to it though not much has happened as of yet. The world is very rich even this small bit into it.

My only hang up is idk what ethnic group these people are supposed to be. I went in thinking Oriental but I don't know any green eyed or red curly haired pale ones. I can usually meld my imagination but this one is giving me problems for sure.

QT should look at this one.

Google is your friend. Realität is much more diverse than politics would like us to believe. Red and even blond hair exist in the Middle East and Asia, and not everyone is brown.

Yep. Will start today.

I finished my Words of Radiance reread and it reminded me how much I loved Stormlight.

I'm sure you prob got the E version. The physical is such a treat. It feels so good and smooth and silky in my hands(shut up Worry). It's not much to look at but both books appear to be well made.

I wish I could BK but for both financial and spatial reasons I am mostly sticking to e copies. Here the ecopy is often cheaper than even the MMPB

I've managed to pick up 'The Runes of the Earth' by Stephen Donaldson.

Can I start with this book (having not read the first two trilogies) or do they follow on from one another?

16 chapters into The Grace of Kings. Despite the strange narration I really rather like it.

Good to see more support here for The Grace of Kings! It's still mostly hated on Westeros. I still need to read book 2, but I can't state enough how much I loved book 1.

In addition to reading City of Stairs, I'm back to Discworld with Moving Pictures. Really enjoying Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler and Gaspode the Wonder Dog.

It is all one continuing story; though the individual series are fairly self-contained (you could stop at the end of each series and be satisfied with the conclusion) they all build heavily upon what has come before.

Having said that, each book (and Runes in particular) has a lengthy "What Has Gone Before" section that would probably get you up to speed fairly well. Of course, for maximum impact you should read all 10 back-to-back-to-back-...
