What's the point in reading on something that you can't kill a man with?

If you can't kill a man with a plastic mechanical gadget, you're not trying hard enough.

I've had my Kindle for almost 6 years now (got it as an unasked-for Christmas gift) but have only really started using it religiously within the past year. It's just so much more convenient than dealing with my physical library, and e-ink is the next best thing to actual paper. I've got 1000+ books on it now, which might make my digital TBR pile worse than my dead tree one!

It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

While i don't have this amount of ebooks on mine (yet)...I am similar to this. It took getting a new Paperwhite though to REALLY enjoy using my Kindle. The old Kindle 3 was not nearly as nice to use.

I've got an old Kindle Touch (so, 4th generation) and after doing a side-by-side with my friend's new Paperwhite, I don't really see any reason to upgrade besides the backlight. (My nighttime solution is a $1 LED flashlight from Walmart.)

But I've strayed off topic...

The Stolen Child has totally sucked me in. It has gone to places I was very much not expecting, and I cannot put it down.

Giving N.K. Jemisin another chance with The Fifth Season as it seems most people find here brilliant, while I found my last read of hers The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms bland. So far it seems decent possibly even good or very good. Only real complaint so far been a single scene which nearly made me throw it away but then some forms of abuse never really needs any details its horrible enough if merely implied. Then there are a couple of facts that are just wierd/unlikely under the circumstances but I'll let those slide so far.

Why would you need a flash light for an electric device. Turn up the brightness of screen.

The old Touch models didn't have a backlight.

I'm a Kobo man myself though. You really should get one for travel purposes at least.

And as a result they can go a number of months without charging.

Even with a backlight the amount of time a charge can last is insane though. I use my Kobo for at least an hour and a half a day with 5% lighting and I only have to charge it about every two months or so.

Another snippet for on-topic: I'm slowly working on Novik's League of Dragons in dead-tree. I've been making it a point to close out as many series as I can through the end of the year and I figure that'll be a lighter counter-weight to the density of Wolfe.

Finished Too like the lightning. While the issues I had with it halfway through persisted, it did ramp up those parts I enjoyed and I really like the path Palmer's taken with her main PoV character so far, so I'm going to jump right into book two, Seven Surrenders. Have I already mentioned that I really like the titles?

Finished the next "Godsdoom -2" book. I only have one left (1 is yet to be published), and I suspect I'll finish my last one before my vacation starts on Thur.

I'll need to take some time this weekend to review the 3 I read this week on Goodreads. It's good stuff all around, though. A few plot lines still don't seem to be going anywhere, but that's similar to how "War of the Mage" was slooowly building up to a super-convergence, so I'm not too worried. Yet.

EDIT: the (specifics-spoiler-free) reviews of all FOUR (yes, I was up till 3 AM last night reading the last one) "Godsdoom-2" books are now up on my Goodreads page

Trekking around Portland, OR post-eclipse and until Sunday, and I've been reading Peter Newman's The Vagrant. He's got an extreme talent for choosing the right word and for naming things.

You came to Portland and didn't say anything until now? I'm disappointed!

I'm currently chipping away at The Urth of the New Sun. God but Wolfe's writing is gorgeous.

Are you in Portland? I leave tomorrow. I'm just glad my town doesn't have a Powell's — largest SF/F section I've ever seen. I'd be living in a box made of paperbacks...

I'm about 15 minutes south of Portland proper now, but yeah. Powell's is a blessing and a curse for sure. It's the reason I keep telling the wife we should get a fourth full-size bookcase. So far, I can't get her to cave though.

Just finished reading The Diary of Anne Frank. It ws quite probably one of the hardest to read books I have ever encountered. Reading about Anne, all her thoughts, aims and ambitions, and then looking at the date of the entry and thinking about how little time she had left....

On a brighter note, 50% into Dragon of a Different Colour by Rachel Aaron. Absolutely superb so far. I love where Aaron is going with this series.

Finished The Troupe by RJB. Pretty good. If I had read this before American Gods or The Library at Mount Char (or even American Elsewhere) I would have loved it more. As is, I don't think it delves into its own backdrops often enough (the Vaudeville circuit for one). I'd say it's an A-level concept with B-level execution, which means it's still pretty darn good, just that it's missing something.

So far my RJB rankings are American Elsewhere > Mr. Shivers > The Troupe >>> The Company Man.

Instead of going back to Robin Hobb, I'm gonna read The Stone Sky first...then do the last two Rain Wilds back to back. That should keep me busy for a while.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I have 3 days of commute left. Gonna try to read the next Iron Druid novel, "Hammered" while I'm still in Canada.

Also need to figure out what I'll grab as my travel books. I think I might do a re-read of Morgan's "The Steel Remains", then read "The Cold Commands" and then buy Vol 3 when I come back, and round off the trilo in one swoop.

Finished Lisa Carey's The Stolen Child. Very very good. The very end was...weird. But that's okay. I don't think I was expecting to get as sucked into this as I did, but it got really good.

Made my 3rd and final attempt at reading FIRST MAN IN ROME by Mcullough.

The first 100 pages are so muddled, and overly verbose with a prose that seems a tad Victorian...that I could stomach no more. I think this book is going to the used book store.
