Onto the Burning Lands, the next Uthred book. Now coming away from the point the TV series finished (as it stands) so I'm looking forward to what I'm about to read!

Just finished the alloy of law. Solid-good read, solid word building and good magical system that you'd expect from Sanderson. I'll follow on the rest of the series with the nice hook for the rest of the series.

I did get irritated a little by some of the use of the tropes. Especially Marasi being reminiscent of Vin's. I'm probably just reading it with a modern lens rather than the in the world perception. It feels like the same character arcs again. Maybe in Marasi's case it just means that it's still shit to be a woman in these worlds.

Edit: I should give more credit though for the time shift in the same world though. It's easy to miss what it a relatively usual thing to do with a series (world of Wu aside)

About 2 years ago I upgraded from a Nook Simpletouch to a Paperwhite. The Nook wiped my SD card, was slow, and didn't have an integrated light (an the Nooks with lights used a sickly green light). Hardware wise, I think the Paperwhite's battery last a little longer. It's the Amazon integration that makes all the difference. It syncs better between the Kindle app on my phone, syncs what I'm reading and how I rate it on amazon to my Goodreads account, and the led lighting is excellent.

I'm only a few days into using my Paperwhite, but it's been simply incredible so far. Light years ahead of my old Kindle3.

The internal light is also brilliant. I'll be on the subway, and when we are underground it faintly glows, making reading that much easier, and when we are above ground and the sun is shining in it's like there is no light on at all. The transition is seamless. Page turning is easy peasy, and I feel all the features are much more handily available at any given time.

High recommendation.

I have long considered getting a PW, but reviews in India reveal a pattern of the device just freezing about 1.5 years in. Since there are no service centres in India this has kept me from buying one.

And there are no Kobo products available here.

On the reading front, 400 pages into House of Leaves, bizarre graduated to terrifying.

That is a risky issue. I checked my amazon account. I ordered my Kindle on June 21st 2015 and it is still going strong. Don't know if that helps you or not.

Its one of the strangest books I have read. The basic story of

Navidson and his family is horrific enough and would have made a perfectly adequate book on its own. But Truant's parallel story in the footnotes is just surreal and almost gut wrenchingly horrific. Its really well done, especially with the academic interjections. It feels quite authentic.

Finished Wheel of Osheim. MIght have been a little sloppier book than his previous work, but a solid conclusion.

Pretty sure i like Thorns trilogy better, but i'll have to let it digest a bit first.

I think I`m about halfway into Wheel of Osheim and I missed my bus stop on the way from work because of it. I wasn't crazy about "Prince of Fools", but Jalan's grown on me. He's a far better character than Jorg, imho.

Finished A Wizard of Earthsea yesterday. While I did enjoy it (and am starting The Tombs of Atuan now), I am not sure why it's so beloved by so many. The world has depth, but that depth is under-explored. The characters are distinct, but shallow (even Ged). Le Guin's prose and pacing are, as expected from previous works I've read, great. For 1968, it was likely very novel; for today, it's just okay. It's a good book, but I could never see it being my favorite.

I also snuck in the entirety of Nnedi Okorafor's Binti last night. Cool concepts, cool Namibian-tribe-inspired culture, and the Meduse were intriguing as a jellyfish-inspired race. Overall, it was not the greatest story, but a few of its conceits were just enough to keep me interested (i.e. the edan, otjize, and finding out more about the Meduse). I'm unsure whether I want to read more of her work.

Oomza University feels like the name of a school straight out of Monsters' Inc.

I have similar feelings towards that series. It can see why it was a big deal for when it was written, i appreciate that it set down a lot of the tropes we see all over genre lit now - notably magic schools, and 'true name' magic - but i don't hold it as a timeless classic the way i do THE HOBBIT.

Oh yeah, me too. I just enjoyed the story in Thorns more than RQW, overall.

Wizard was a bit dry and very 'introductory', but Tombs of Atuan and The Farthest Shore were both great reads imo.

Also polished off Red Sister by Mark Lawrence this week - enjoyed it, some interesting ideas in there too.
